Mackey, Cole decide

Newport Harbor High swimmers Nicole Mackey and Andrew Cole announced

their verbal commitments to their respective universities Wednesday.

Cole will swim for the University of Utah, while Mackey will

compete for Hawaii.

Cole went undefeated in the 100 freestyle last year, achieving a

CIF title in the event, which helped the Sailors capture their first

CIF Division I title.

Mackey, who owns or is affiliated with seven out of 11 school

records, currently has the fastest time in Orange County this season

in the 200-yard individual medley, 2:06.53. She finished second in

the 200 IM and 100 butterfly last year in CIF Division I. She also

drew interest from USC, though Hawaii seemed more interested, Mackey

said.
