Taking care of their PALS at the Lodge

The “in crowd” all came to the in spot, otherwise known as the Lodge

Restaurant at the Camp in Costa Mesa.

The young, and not so restless, Orange Coast 30-something crowd

who have joined forces to become the Orangewood PALS converged on the

Lodge for a midweek mixer that raised nearly $5,000 to help support

the children cared for by Orangewood.

PALS, Providing Assistance Love and Support, is an auxiliary

organization that has attracted a growing contingent of young

executives in the community. Many PALS members are not married and

have no children of their own, yet they have become dedicated and

caring members of the community at-large, working to make a better

life for children in need.

Spotted in the crowd at the Lodge were Barbara Eidson, Karen

Rasmussen, Keri Dugan, Keith Bohr, Marty Dutch and Rich Dutch.

The Pediatric Adolescent Diabetics Research Foundation will host

its 14th annual Fashion show dinner on May 3 at the Hyatt Regency

Huntington Beach Resort and Spa.

In 13 years, the event has raised more than $1 million through the

PADRE Foundation, benefiting diabetics research and education. This

year, the organizers are billing the event as a “Garden Party.”

Chaired by Penny Lopez and Kathy McGuigan, with support from Susan

Savage and Sue Cannon, the evening will be sponsored by Fashion

Island and Washington Mutual and include dinner, a fashion show and

auction opportunities.

Robinsons-May will handle the fashion extravaganza. The highlight

of the evening will be the models showing off the latest spring

fashions. Diabetic youngsters from age 2 to 20 will hit the catwalk

to help raise funds for the PADRE Foundation.

Tickets for the Garden party are $100 per person. To reserve your

spot, please call the PADRE office at (714) 532-8330.

HEART ASSN. GALA SET

The American Heart Assn.’s “Heart to Heart Gala” is set for May 17

at the Hyatt Regency Irvine. This year’s elegant evening is dedicated

to the memory of John Entwistle, bass player for the British rock

group the Who. Entwistle died in June under care for a heart

condition. It was reported that his death was from a heart attack

brought on by drug use.

Entwistle’s family, including his former wife Max Harlow, are

joining forces with the American Heart Assn. to raise awareness of

heart disease and strokes, and perhaps more importantly, wave the red

flag of danger about drug use.

“This is a wonderful tribute to John and his memory while

supporting the work of the American Heart Assn.,” Harlow said.

Orange County leader Tom Nielsen will chair the gala.

“I am a longtime fan of the Who,” Nielsen said. “Entwistle’s music

will live on, and this upcoming evening will add to his legacy

accomplishing two goals: helping reduce the toll of heart disease and

urging others to stay sober.”

A number of singers and bands have agreed to donate personal items

for the Heart to Heart charity auction. Memorabilia will go to the

highest bidder. Items have been donated by Patti LaBelle, Eric

Clapton, Billy Idol, Carlos Santana, Bon Jovi, Cheap Trick, Counting

Crows, No Doubt, Kenny G, Jim Altieri and Dave Gink. The 22nd annual

Heart to Heart Gala promises to be one of the major black-tie events

on the spring social calendar.

Attracting a widespread contingent of community leaders, the

evening should raise substantial funds for the American Heart Assn.

Tickets are $300 per person. For reservations, please call Erica

Garza at (949) 865-3555.

* THE CROWD runs Thursdays and Saturdays.
