Bench designed to memorialize AIDS

The city of Laguna Beach HIV Advisory Committee will dedicate a

park bench as the city’s memorial to the AIDS pandemic.

The bench will overlook the beach in the 100 block of Mountain

Street and include a bronze plaque reading “In memory of those who

lost their lives and those who may lose their lives to AIDS.”

Committee co-chair Joseph Amster said the bench will provide a

place to reflect on the toll of AIDS, as well as a reminder that the

AIDS is still a worldwide problem.

Another project of the committee is an AIDS awareness pamphlet

created by Laguna Beach High School students. The group works with

local bar and nightclub owners to ensure safe-sex kits are available

to patrons.

The committee meets at 4 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month

at the Laguna Beach City Hall, 505 Forest Ave. Information: 497-3311.

Change your clocks, batteries and water

Daylight savings will begin Sunday, and the Laguna Beach Fire

Department suggests changing the batteries in your smoke alarms as

you set your clocks forward, and again when setting clocks back in

the fall.

The majority of residential fires occur between the late evening

hours and 6 a.m., and early detection is the key to survival, veteran

fire engineer Jeff Priest said. He also encourages the community to

replenish its emergency water supply and review disaster/emergency

preparedness plans as part of the same twice-a-year regimen.
