Anteaters second at Western Intercollegiate tournament

The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished second among 18 teams in the

56th annual Western Intercollegiate tournament that concluded Tuesday

afternoon at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz.

UCLA, ranked No. 10, won the 54-hole tournament with a total of

855 strokes, followed by UCI at 862 and UTEP with 868. The Anteaters

are ranked No. 35 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin national ratings.

UCLA’s Steve Conway was the tourney medalist with a three-round total

of 2-under-par 208.

UCI senior Jeff Coburn shot a 1-under 69 Tuesday and finished

fourth at 211 (71-71-69). Junior Vinnie Poncino placed 14th at 217

(75-66-76), senior Ryan Armstrong was 17th at 218 (70-76-72), senior

Mike Lavery shot a 69 in the final round to finish 30th at 222

(76-77-69).

Freshman Ryne Rindfleisch was 39th at 224 (73-74-77).

Coach Paul Smolinski’s UCI squad returns to action in the U.S.

Intercollegiate tournament at the Stanford University Golf Course

April 19-20.

UCI women finish 10th

* UC Irvine’s women’s golf team was 10th at the BYU-Dixie Classic

in St. George, Utah with a 54-hole total of 934. Stella Lee led the

Anteaters with a 222 (72-71-79). Angela Won was ninth, carding a 226

(71-79-76). She shot a career-low 71 in the first round, the third

time she has done that this season.

Sailors come up short

* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High boys golf team was edged, 392-396,

by nonleague visitor Palm Desert Tuesday in an 18-hole match at Santa

Ana Country Club.

Michael Benvenuti was low man for the Sailors with a 5-over-par

77.

Brandon Sowers (79), Michael Vackar (79), Davis Pemstein (80) and

David Motschenbacher (81) also scored for the Sailors (4-7).

Palm Desert’s Aaron Davis shot 74 to earn medalist honors.

Newport Harbor fell to 4-7.
