Hitless Estancia victorious anyway

* SOFTBALL: The Estancia High softball team failed to get a hit, but

didn’t fail to come up with a victory Wednesday, edging Golden West

League visitor Orange, 1-0.

Orange pitcher Vanessa Zboril walked four, including two to help

fuel the Eagles’ lone run in the sixth inning.

Laura Morton walked to start the frame and Be Diep took over as a

pinch-runner. Diep, a recent junior varsity call-up seeing her first

varsity action, advanced to second on Muriel Mason’s sacrifice bunt.

After Evelyn Flores walked, Diep bolted for third when a pitch in the

dirt evaded the Orange catcher. The catcher eventually recovered and

threw to third, where the third baseman mishandled the throw for an

error, allowing Diep to score the game-winner.

Mason struck out seven in a complete-game three-hitter to earn her

sixth win in eight decisions this season.

Estancia improved to 9-4, 2-3 in league, while Orange fell to 8-5,

3-2.

“We’ll take it,” Estancia Coach Marc Rodig said of the

unconventional triumph.

* TENNIS: The Corona del Mar High boys tennis team improved to

15-0 and 6-0 in the Pacific Coast League with a 17-1 home victory

Wednesday over Northwood.

University of Texas-bound senior standout Garrett Snyder swept at

No. 1 singles, while sophomores Carsten Ball and Spencer Reitz won

all three of their singles sets. Northwood, which defeated University

on Tuesday, 10-8, fell to 6-6, 5-1.

In doubles, CdM’s Wesley Miller and Issei Saida swept at No. 1,

while Bryan Warsaw and Brennan Roberts won three sets at No. 2.

CdM hosts Laguna Beach April 22.

* BASEBALL: Vanguard University dealt visiting Westmont a double

dose of the blanks Wednesday, scoring 3-0 and 5-0 Golden State

Athletic Conference victories behind the shutout pitching of Jason

Searle and Josh Franco.

Searle two-hit Westmont over seven innings in the opener. Two

unearned runs in the third inning and a solo shot by Jon Bower in the

fifth proved decisive.

Franco struck out three, walked none and was backed up by a 10-hit

attack. Scott Zine and Matt Tisthammer each banged out two singles

and Searle had a double.

Pirates sweep foe

* VOLLEYBALL: Defending Orange Empire Conference champion Orange

Coast neded just over an hour to dispose of visiting San Diego Mesa,

30-18, 30-13, 30-25, Wednesday.

For one of the few times silnce conference play began, Coach Chuck

Cutenese was able to empty his bench.

David Doxey took over after Game 1 and had 21 assists. Kaione

Scott had 13 digs and saw time in the front row. Poyer Poia had nine

digs and five service aces. Kaimana Kamalni added six kills for the

Pirates, who have now won four of the past five matches.

Coast improves to 15-5, 10-4.

Mesa falls in three

* VOLLEYBALL: Costa Mesa High’s boys volleyball team dropped a

2-15, 10-15, 15-13, 4-15 Golden West League decision at Saddleback

High in Santa Ana Wednesday, falling to 1-11, 0-6 in league.

Sophomore middle blockers Garrett Walthers (four kills, three

stuff blocks) and Gabriel Gonzales (three stuff blocks), along with

freshman opposite Ryan Bagwell (18 digs) stood out for the Mustangs.

Pirates fall, 13-0

* SOFTBALL: Orange Coast College’s softball team ran into a Tiger

on Wednesday and lost a 13-0 Orange Empire Conference game to

visiting Riverside.

Kelly Sharum was Coast’s only player with a base hit, a single in

the fifth inning.

Riverside, 32-16, 8-6 in the OEC, had a 14-hit assault, paced by

Megan Moltz, who went 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs. Jennifer

Barth had a two-run homer and pitcher Carla Chasey struck out four

and walked four en route to the one-hit shutout in a game shortened

to five innings. OCC falls to 9-14, 4-10.

* Costa Mesa High’s softball team dropped its first Golden West

League game as host Westminster surprised the Mustangs with a

five-run fourth-inning which featured six singles and a double, en

route to a 7-3 victory.

Kelly Topps had a solo homer in the first inning and Uyen Mai

delivered a two-run triple in the sixth, but Westminster’ fourth

inning ruled.

Mesa falls to 9-5, 3-1 in league. Westminster improves to 6-3,

3-3.

‘Eaters lose, 13-6

* WATER POLO: UC Irvine’s women’s water polo team absorbed a 13-6

Mountain Pacific Sports Federation loss to host USC Wednesday.

Karly Tivenan, Michelle Carey and Erica Horman each scored twice

for UCI, but a 7-2 halftime deficit proved decisive.

USC improves to 16-3, 9-1 in the MPSF.

Eagles drive past Chino

*GOLF: Freshman Marcus Sostak tallied his second eagle of the

season and shot a 2-under-par 33 to pace the Estancia High boys golf

team to a 182-204 nonleague win over Chino Hills Wednesday. The 182

is the lowest of the season for Estancia, said Coach Art Perry.

Sostak eagled the par-5 fifth hole and added two birdies to his

round at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.

Ryan Brown shot a 36 to go with a 37 by Jason Cassidy and 38s each

from Greg Les and Austin Serr for Estancia (9-2, 4-0 in the Golden

West League).

Sage Hill rolls, 15-3

* TENNIS: Sage Hill School defeated host Brethren Christian,

15-3, in an Academy League boys tennis match Wednesday as all three

of the Lightning doubles teams swept in straight sets.

Ara Demirjian and Tristian Cordier played No. 1 doubles for Sage

Hill (5-6, 4-2 in league), while Mark Ramadan and Todd Montekab

teamed at No. 2 and Drew Roeser and Kent Kuran at No. 3.

Sage Hill, ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division V, will

travel to No. 2 Whitney in a league showdown Friday.

77 with Jason Hethcoat (81), Brad Champion (83) and Jared Bruce (84)

also scoring.
