WHAT HAPPENED: The City Council approved plans...

WHAT HAPPENED:

The City Council approved plans for a new storm water treatment

project.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The city has plans install devices that will separate and remove

trash and debris from the storm water runoff before the water is

released into the ocean.

The units will be installed 15 to 25 feet below ground at the 12

storm drain outlets that discharge onto the city beaches. The devices

will be cleaned approximately three to four times per year.

The project is estimated to cost about $1 million and has been

approved by the State Water Resources Control Board as part of a

$4-million grant for storm water quality improvements.

Dave Sullivan was absent at the meeting.

WHAT HAPPENED:

The city approved funding for improvements at the Agnes L. Smith

Elementary School.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The city will acquire 136 feet of property from the school

district on the east corner of 17th Street and Palm Avenue to put in

a traffic signal. Construction is set to begin this summer.

The estimated cost for design and improvements is $264,000, with

$237,000 provided by a Caltrans grant, and the additional $27,000

funded by Measure M dollars.

Measure M is the half-cent sales tax approved by Orange County

voters in November 1990 for countywide transportation improvements.

WHAT HAPPENED:

The City Council voted to accept a bid and award a construction

contract to an independent contractor for an improvement project in

the Oak View neighborhood.

WHAT IT MEANS:

Elite Bobcat Service Inc. was the lowest bidder for the project.

Construction will consist of street improvements to Speer and Liberty

avenues in the Oak View neighborhood. It will include street

widening, curb, gutter and sidewalk repairs and landscaping work.

Bids for construction were announced Feb. 3. Bidding opened March

4.
