OCC athletes sparkle at meet

Art Diaz, Keinan Briggs, Jasmine Geider and Roseann Peters were among

the top performers for Orange Coast College in the OCC Five-Way Track

and Field Meet Friday afternoon against nonconference visitors San

Diego Mesa, Antelope Valley, Cuyamaca and Bakersfield. It was a

nonscoring meet.

Diaz took top honors in both the 1,500- and 3,000-meter races,

while Peters won the 800 meters and took second in the 3,000 as the

Pirates dominated the distance events. Geider was one of a number of

the Coast women to find her name in several categories. She took

second in the 100 (13.98) and third in the long jump (14-0 1/4),

while running a leg in the winning 4x100 meter relay team.

Also, state champion Michelle Icban won the 3,000 with a time of

10:11.49, while Diaz won the men’s side of the race in 8:41.47.

Lauren Cassity also had a strong day, winning the javelin (102-1),

taking fourth in the 100 meters (14.51) and running on the winning

4x400 meter relay team.

Orange Coast hosts Santiago Canyon and Fullerton April 17 in the

conference finale for all three schools starting at 2 p.m. Freshman

Hanni Geider, Jasmine’s twin sister, has qualified for the State Meet

in the heptathlon after finishing fifth in a Southern California meet

at Mt. San Antonio College two weeks ago.

UCI’s Liou second

* COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine junior Jenny Liou placed

second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:53.28 in the

California/Nevada Championships at San Diego State Friday. Fresno

State’s Kara June was the winner with a time of 10:36.46.

In the men’s steeplechase, Anteater senior Travis Morisoli placed

10th with a time of 9:31.23.

Finals in the majority of the events will be held Saturday.

Barnett, Gordon double

in Fountain Valley

* HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD: Braden Barnett and sophomore Laura

Gordon won two events each for the Sage Hill School boys and girls

track and field teams in their four-way Academy League meet at

Fountain Valley High Friday.

Barnett, a junior on the Sage Hill boys team, won the shot put

(41-1 1/4) and the discus (111-9 1/2) to help the Lightning finish

second with 63 points. The Lightning’s boys squad improved to 2-3 in

league after the meet that included Brethren Christian, Capistrano

Valley Christian and St. Margaret’s.

On the girls side, Gordon won the 100-meter hurdles (18.6) and the

triple jump (30-6 1/2) to help Sage Hill finish third. The

Lightning’s record is now 1-4 in league.

Pirates fall to Palomar

* JC VOLLEYBALL: Daniel Stedman had 18 kills and setter Marc

Lomeli had a match-best 64 assists to lead visiting Palomar to a

31-29, 14-30, 22-30, 30-28, 17-15 win over host Orange Coast Friday

night in Orange Empire Conference play.

The Pirates, who still have a chance at a playoff berth if they

can win their final match at Irvine Valley, posted victories in games

two and three with relative ease after coming up short in the opening

game. However, the Comets (8-7 in conference) evened the match at 2-2

with the slim margin in game four.

OCC (15-6, 10-5) visits Irvine Valley Wednesday at 7 p.m. with a

playoff berth on the line.

Eagles earn personal

best in victory

* HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING: The Estancia High boys swim team defeated

nonleague host Savanna, 97-71, Friday, when three members of the

Eagles’ squad earned personal records in their respective events.

Senior Skipper Todd won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:18.32, senior

Frank Gamboa won the 500 free (5:31.39) and junior Paul Collier won

the 100 free (57.25). All three were personal best for the swimmers.

Gamboa also won the 50 free (25.68), freshman Chad Kunert won the

200 free (2:08.74) and junior Nathan Marsteller won the 100

breaststroke (1:18.56) for the Eagles (5-4).

Sage Hill downs Brethren Christian

* HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Freshman Katie McKitterick smacked a

two-run single in the fourth inning to help lead the Sage Hill School

softball team to a 4-1 Academy League victory over visiting Brethren

Christian Friday.

Sage Hill Coach Jim Percival said McKitterick’s base hit gave the

Lightning (7-5, 3-1 in league) the boost it needed. In addition,

Catherine Dailey struck out three, walked one and allowed one

unearned run to pick up her fourth pitching win of the season.

OCC defeats SD Mesa

* JC BADMINTON: The Orange Coast College women’s badminton team

defeated host San Diego Mesa in an Orange Empire Conference match

Friday. The Pirates won, 15-6 and improved to 8-4, while San Diego

Mesa dropped to 5-6.

Pirates lose by five

in Rancho California

* JC GOLF: The Orange Coast College men’s golf team was narrowly

defeated by Mt. San Jacinto, 416-411, on par-72 in nonconference

action at the SCGA Members’ Club at Rancho California Friday.

The Pirates (11-9) Shaun Vickers led the team with an 81, followed

by Brad Champion (82), Kelly Wicks (83), Jared Bruce (84) and Jason

Heathcoat (86).
