Police will set up DUI checkpoint

The Newport Beach Police Department will hold a sobriety

checkpoint on Friday night at the intersection of Newport Boulevard

and Finley Avenue, officials said.

The checkpoint will be operated from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m.

Saturday. The location near City Hall was selected based on the high

number of DUI-related arrests and accidents that have occurred there,

Sgt. Steve Shulman said.

“The purpose of the checkpoint is not merely to arrest those

driving under the influence, but to educate drivers about the dangers

of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” he said.

The checkpoint is being funded through an Office of Transportation

Safety grant, Shulman said.
