Snyder wins twice at Ojai tournament

Corona del Mar High senior standout and University of Texas-bound

Garrett Snyder advanced to today’s Round of 16 with two victories

Thursday in the boys CIF singles division at the Ojai Valley Tennis

Tournament.

Snyder, who has won the past two CIF Southern Section doubles

titles and also an Ojai doubles championship two years ago with Brian

Morton, will face Servite’s Jonathan Sanchez today at 8 a.m. in the

Round of 16.

Snyder defeated Taft’s Joseph Tchan, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round

and Brethren Christian’s Jonathon Bowman in the second round, 6-2,

6-1.

Also in the boys CIF singles, Newport Beach’s Kaes Van’t Hof

(Mater Dei) won twice to advance to the Round of 16, while Newport

Beach’s Jake Fleming and Fabian Matthews reached the Round of 16 in

the boys 14s. Fleming is the top seed. Newport’s Robert Khoury and

Spencer Reitz advanced to the Round of 16 in the boys 16s.

In community college division, Ashley Nelson and Leah Becker of

Orange Coast College advanced in women’s singles and doubles in the

second round. Nelson defeated Imperial Valley’s Sachiko Kataoka, 6-0,

6-1, while Becker topped Mission’s Suparna Barya, 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles, Nelson-Becker beat Cuyamaca’s Sunny Silveira and Nancy

Witherspoon, 6-1, 6-1, while OCC teammates Rachael Sessum and Sabrina

Tanamal knocked off Imperial Valley’s Amanda Godinez and Kataoka,

6-1, 6-0.

In men’s singles action for OCC, Robert Chu defeated Jay Benitez

of Porterville, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round. In doubles, Mike

Fulminante and Spencer Solomon advanced to today’s Round of 32 with

two victories, beating a team from Diablo Valley, 6-2, 6-0, and a

tandem from San Bernardino Valley, 6-3, 6-0, in the second round.
