Trailer slows traffic on Coast Highway

A tractor-trailer overturned at the intersection of Coast Highway

and Superior Avenue on Thursday morning dumping 17 tons of

construction material on the roadway, backing up and slowing down

traffic for several hours, officials said.

The incident happened at about 7 a.m., when the driver of the

tractor trailer tried to make a left turn from Coast Highway to

Superior Avenue, officials said. One lane on Coast Highway and all of

northbound Superior Avenue were closed for several hours, police

said.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Ladera Ranch man charged in car wreck

The Orange County district attorney’s office charged a 28-year-old

Los Angeles Sheriff’s deputy with gross vehicular manslaughter while

intoxicated in connection with a Jan. 12 car accident in Costa Mesa

that took his best friend’s life.

David Robison, 28, of Rancho Santa Margarita, died instantly after

the car Phil Steyerman was driving veered off the road and struck a

tree near the intersection of Newport Boulevard and Industrial Way.

Steyerman, of Ladera Ranch, is now on paid administrative leave.

He was arraigned Thursday at the Harbor Justice Center and pleaded

not guilty to the charge. The judge decided that he would not have to

go to jail provided he attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and

surrenders his driver’s license. The judge also ordered that he be

booked by the Costa Mesa Police Department.

Officials said that Robison’s family has been “very active in

pushing for [Steyerman’s] prosecution.”
