Thousands of jellyfish wash ashore

Thousands of bright blue jellyfish shaped like little sailboats

washed ashore in Newport Beach on Friday, lifeguard officials said.

The velella velella, or by-the-wind sailor, is not a threat to

human beings and does not sting.

The creatures can be seen best at high tide lines throughout

Newport Beach and Corona del Mar.

Clean harbor day at nautical museum

The Newport Harbor Nautical Museum today will host its 23rd annual

clean harbor day celebration, “Don’t Trash Where You Splash.”

The free event at the museum, 151 E. Coast Highway, takes place

from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Among the activities are an environmental scavenger hunt;

interaction with an underwater diver by a live audio and visual

hookup; and Harbor Patrol rides.

Harbor Boulevard onramp closing

The northbound Harbor Boulevard onramp to the northbound San Diego

Freeway will close Monday for three weeks so Caltrans can realign it.

The onramp was supposed to close last week, but the project was

delayed.

The California Department of Transportation suggests that

motorists use the Hyland Avenue onramp to the north San Diego Freeway

as a detour.

The work is part of a project with the Orange County

Transportation Authority to improve the San Diego and Corona del Mar

freeways between Bear Street and Hyland in Costa Mesa.

The construction, slated to finish in 2004, will improve on- and

offramps at Harbor and Fairview Road and add a new onramp at Hyland.
