Top-ranked Newport Harbor High exacts revenge on Corona del Mar in

a Sea View League boys volleyball match with a 15-6 ,15-11, 15-8

sweep. The Tars (9-0, 5-0 in league), who lost to CdM in a

best-of-three title match in the Orange County Championships earlier

that season, are led by Scott Archbold and Matt Jameson, who tally 17

and 10 kills, respectively, while Zach Wells, Scott Dore, Adam

Hearlson, Ty Tramblie and setter Travis Nelson all contribute. Sea

Kings’ outside hitter Greg Stampley tallies 11 kills while setter

Kevin Hansen collects seven. CdM commits eight of its 20 hitting

errors in Game 3, but stays with Newport until the final sideout.

Jameson then goes on to serve six unanswered points to close out the

match.

Newport Harbor’s boys and girls track and field teams both defeat

host Irvine in a Sea View League dual meet. Seniors Chuck Loo and

April Ross each win three events. Loo wins the 200 meters (23.3),

high jump (6-2) and triple jump (41-8) to help Coach Bim Barry’s

squad take a 83-53 decision. Ross bests the field in the triple jump

(36-5), long jump (15-4 1/2) and high jump (5-2) as the girls roll,

89-47. Steve Jensen, competing for the first time that season,

doubles in the 400 (50.6) and 800 (2:02.8). Curt Herberts wins the

1,600 (4:32.4) and 3,200 (9:56) while Eddie Clark is unstoppable in

the shot put (45-4) and discus (145-9). Leah Zaby in the 100 (12.7)

and 200 (27.3), along with Amber Steen in the 800 (2:23.4) and 1,600

(5:17) each double on the girls side.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week:

Newport Harbor’s Geoff Abrams, ranked No. 1 in the nation in boys

14s, defeats Fullerton’s Joseph Gilbet, 6-2, 6-3, in the boys 16s

final of the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament, the second time he wins

the event. CdM’s top-seeded doubles team of Trenton Rhodes and Brian

Walden advance to the finals of the boys interscholastic doubles

after defeating La Jolla’s Carl Adams and Simon Shen, 6-4, 6-2, in

the semifinals.

Dave McKiernan, one of the area’s most successful coaches the last

three years at Estancia, sees his tenure with the boys soccer program

end. “Frank Infusino [Estancia principal] and myself have decided to

go in other directions,” says Estancia Athletic Director Ed Blanton.

“We made a decision and that’s about all we have to say about that.”

McKiernan leads Estancia to the CIF playoffs twice and was headed for

a third appearance with what appeared to be a Pacific Coast League

championship along with it before it is discovered late in the season

that the school was using an ineligible player, causing multiple

forfeits.

Freestyler Sam Grayeli wins two events and anchors Costa Mesa

High’s winning 200-yard medley relay (1:57.57) as the Mustangs blow

out visiting Century, 111-46, in a Pacific Coast League dual meet.

Grayeli wins the 200 (2:00.56) and the 500 (5:39.69) while James

Comfort takes the 100 butterfly (1:00.90) to go with a second-place

finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.97). Mike Curtis sprints to

first in the 100 free (55.34) and takes second in the 100 backstroke

(1:13.63). Bernard Perone wins the 100 back (1:13.24) while John

Naigle takes the 100 breaststroke (1:13.44) and finishes second in

the 200 free (2:08.56). Bob Paulhus wins the 200 individual medley

(2:22.25) for the Mustangs (2-2 in league).
