ARROYO GRANDE -- Costa Mesa High’s softball team split two games in

the consolation bracket to wrap up play in the Arroyo Grande

Tournament Saturday.

The Mustangs came back from a 3-0 first-inning deficit and held

off Morro Bay to win, 5-4, in the morning.

Mesa sophomore Paulina Rodriguez knocked home Uyen Mai for the

go-ahead run in the fifth inning. Mai had singled to lead off the

inning. Rodriguez then threw out a runner attempting to stretch a

single into a double in the top of the sixth and starter Jane-E

Yamamoto got the final out for her second victory.

Sisters Kelly and Anne Marie Topps each knocked in runs, with

Kelly scoring a run on a Mai single.

Three of Mesa’s seven errors came in the first, when St. Joseph of

Lakewood scored four runs, three on a bases-clearing double, in a 5-1

afternoon victory.

Mai singled to begin the fifth and eventually came around to score

on a sacrifice fly by Katie Renish.
