Dodgers’ Watt, Hill combine for no-hitter against D-backs

Andrew Watt and Kyle Hill combined on a no-hitter for the Dodgers as

they beat the Diamondbacks, 1-0, in Newport Beach Little League

Majors Division play.

Andrew Noto drove in Eric Hansen for the winning run.

Tommy Colton, Fletcher Della Grotta and Steven Manning combined

for a four-hitter for the Diamondbacks.

In other Majors action:

* Giants 3, Mariners 0

Zak Maurer-Erickson allowed only one hit while pitching 5 1/3

scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts to give the Giants their first

victory this season.

Kendall Pick recorded a save, striking out one in relief while

Maurer-Erickson went out after throwing 100 pitches.

Shortstop Jerry Kazmierczak led an error-free defensive effort

with two putouts, including the final out in the sixth inning.

Brandon Pick made a running catch of a fly ball off the bat of

Nick Freeman. Patrick Vorwerck also saved a run in the fourth. Nick

Klein and Matt Wheatley each had key assists with Robert Connealy and

Evan Kort both providing solid defensive efforts.

Vorwerck singled home two runs while Scott Cook added another RBI.

Matt Ruiz scored in the fourth and Kyle Jensen added a base hit.

* Yankees 10, Braves 5

Solid pitching combined with steady fielding and timely hitting

allowed the Yankees to earn the victory.

Yankee starter Matt Morris pitched well the first three innings.

Catchers Tyler Haly and John Christian allowed no passed balls.

Eric Morris’ line drive in the second inning scored scored the

first Yankee run and Danny Baker, Morris and Haly then fed off the

momentum with solid hitting.

Parker Stone, Camden Nicholson and Jeffrey Jones led the Braves at

the plate.

Danny Baker played well at second and shortstop for the Yankees

and Bret Weinberger pitched the final three innings to close the

game.

In AAA play:

* Mariners 14, Cardinals 2

The Mariners’ hitting attack continued throughout.

The Mariners scored five runs in the third inning. Devin Gunay and

Mitch Gardner each walked to open the inning. Steve Clapp singled,

Andrew Machoskie doubled and Dean Murdock [walk] and Chris Alvarez

[single] contributed in the inning.

Jackie Anderson hit a solo home run in the fifth and Gardner stole

home in the fourth for another run.

The Mariners kept it on in the sixth with a leadoff double by

Machoskie, an infield hit by Austin Blodgett, walks to Alvarez and

Anderson and a two-run single by Jed Thayer, which put the score,

14-2.

The Mariners put up two runs in the first with a walk to Clapp, an

infield hit by Machoskie and a triple by Blodgett.

Anderson singled with two outs in the second inning, stole second

and then scored.

Gardner and Thayer posted a combined seven strikeouts.

* Yankees 9, A’s 1

Graeme Frazer and Bryce Ashton combined to strike out 16 batters

and limited the A’s to just two hits, both by Sam Cubiero.

Patrick Pearson led the Yankees with a triple while Preston

Risser, Nick Gooding, Tanner Trauthen and Jack Murphy scored two runs

each.

* Yankees 6, Reds 5

The Reds had the bases loaded with one out in the final inning,

but two players were caught trying to steal home, and the Yankees

prevailed. Frazer and Risser combined for the key putouts.

The Yankees were powered by triples from Frazer and Trauthen along

with timely hitting by Gooding, Michael Haeri, Benny Townsend and

Pearson.

Eric Frazier, Jeremy Fox and Murphy anchored the defense while

Risser and Frazer combined to record 11 strikeouts in limiting the

Reds to only four hits.

In NHBA play:

* D-backs 4, Cubs 3

Jamie Davis and Blake Bell each threw three innings and combine

for 13 strikeouts as the Diamondbacks defeated the first-place Cubs,

4-3, in Newport Harbor Baseball Association Mustang Division

(9-10-year-old) action.

Hits by Grant Frazier, Kevin Kruger and Bell paced the D-backs.

The Cubs are led by strong pitching from Austin Rios, Christopher

Lomenzo and Nate Johnson, who combined for nine strikeouts.

In the Pinto Division:

* The Red Sox were led by Bryan Shollin and Robert Alexander, who

each tallied three hits against the White Sox.

Martin Jr. Najera added a double and two singles with Quinci

Holgate tallying three hits. Austin Smith, Timothy McGetrick, Estevan

Muniz and Spencer Buchanan also played well for the Red Sox.

* The Astros and Giants battled to a tie, with strong performances

on both sides.

Giants’ pitcher Riley Peterson made a diving catch on an infield

fly while Nicholas Sargeant also made a solid grab on a fly ball.

Sargeant also contributes a hit as does Tanner Barret, William Fuchs,

Nick LeGrandeur, James Klobe and Brendan Gordon.

Blake Pender had a solid all-around game on the mound, at the

plate and in the field.

Michael Eder, Chase Whiting, Wyatt Muller and Michael Reo all

combined for a multi-run inning and the Astros played heads-up

defense.

* Roger Mann caught two fly balls and tallied a triple as the Blue

Jays dueled the Mariners.

Remington Weiss made some fine plays in the outfield and also

knocked a couple of hits.
