Sea Kings humbled by Lions

In a wild and crazy high school make-up game Monday, Southland

powerhouse Arlington defeated host Corona del Mar, 19-7, in the final

round of the early-season Newport Elks Tournament, taking advantage

of 10 Sea King errors.

“They’re a real good team,” CdM Coach John Emme said of the

Riverside-based Lions, ranked 12th in the Los Angeles Times’ regional

poll.

Arlington scored eight runs in the first inning and added at least

one run in every inning except the third. In the bottom of the fifth,

however, the Sea Kings (11-7 and a league-leading 7-2 in the Pacific

Coast League) posted five runs as they rallied to within 15-7, led by

the offensive attack of junior outfielder Parker Ferguson, who was 3

for 3 with three runs scored.

Keith Long was 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored for the Sea

Kings, while Nick Karpe was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.

Arlington had three doubles, a home run and 10 singles against

CdM. Sea King starter Griffin Dunzer, a senior who suffered the loss

with some shaky defense behind him, was picked up in the sixth by

senior Ryan Rhodes.
