League champions cruise

* The Estancia High boys golf team solidified its grip on the Golden

West League championship with a 188-232 victory over crosstown and

league rival Costa Mesa Tuesday at the Costa Mesa Golf & Country

Club.

It’s the first league title in seven seasons for Coach Art Perry’s

Eagles, who won three straight Pacific Coast League crowns from

1994-96.

The Eagles improved to 12-3, 7-0 in league. Perry said he was

uncertain whether his team would play its final league match against

Ocean View, but it would not affect the Eagles’ place atop the

standings.

Estancia senior Ryan Brown had the low round Tuesday, shooting par

35 on the Mesa Linda course. Jason Les (39), Greg Les (40) and Nick

Lettieri (42) followed for the Eagles, while junior Brian Beach (42)

led Mesa scorers.

Adam Donovan (45), Billy Jackson (46), Brett Via (46) and Joey

Edwards (54) rounded out the scorers for the Mustangs, who fell to

1-6 in league.

CdM earns title share

* The Corona del Mar High boys golf team clinched at least a tie

for the Pacific Coast League championship with a 186-231 romp over

PCL foe Calvary Chapel Tuesday at Newport Beach Country Club.

Senior Nick Sherman had a pair of birdies en route to a par 35 to

earn medalist honors, while Tim Frohling (36), Alex Chikovani (36),

Brad Chamberlin (39) and Ben Tilsen (40) also helped the Sea Kings

improve to 12-4, 8-1 in league.

Tesoro, with two league losses, would need to win its final league

match and hope CdM fell to Northwood in the Sea Kings’ league finale,

Thursday at Aliso Viejo Golf Club, to tie for the crown.

A CdM win over the Timberwolves would give the Sea Kings their

second straight outright PCL title. The Sea Kings won the first match

with Northwood, 196-204, April 7 at the T-wolves’ home course.

CdM’s home course, NBCC, is unavailable, so the match must be

played at Aliso Viejo.

“That will make things a little more interesting,” CdM Coach Mike

Starkweather said.

Warriors best Sailors

* Newport Harbor High sophomore Brandon Sowers shot 4-over 40 to

pace the Sailors, but visiting Woodbridge earned a 191-210 Sea View League boys golf victory Tuesday at Big Canyon Country Club.

David Motschenbacher (41), Rhett Palmer (42), Davis Pemstein (43)

and Mike Thacker (44) rounded out the scorers for the Sailors, who

fell to 4-10, 3-6 in league.

Woodbridge, the No. 1 team in Orange County, was led by medalist

Billy Moon (35).
