ERIC BEVER ON:

* DOWNTOWN REDEVELOPMENT ZONE:

“I think we need to allow the consultants to finish their work

before we can make a judgment on [adding 434 acres to the downtown

redevelopment zone]. We were attempting to do that with the

preliminary plan area that has been held up. They’re really in a

study phase, and I support studying the area and the issues. Once all

the information is gathered, it’s incumbent upon the Redevelopment

Agency to sit down with the staff and figure out what we have to work

with, assessing what the realities are, and I fully support that.”

* DEALING WITH THE STATE BUDGET CRISIS:

“I think the city should exercise fiscal responsibility. If we

have to cut the budget, it will be a difficult process to weed the

wheat from the chaff, but it’s a process the council and staff will

endeavor to achieve -- assessing the budgetary needs and the basics

need to stay funded -- public safety and things like that. I haven’t

looked at the budget, I don’t know where the staff is suggesting

cuts, if any. Another approach might be to increase the amount of

residential housing we have to improve our property tax base. We rely

very heavily on a sales tax base, and the state may be taking a chunk

out of that. It won’t be a short-term fix, but in the long run, it

will help to stabilize our income base.”
