Students win for their editorial views

Huntington Beach High School juniors wrote “letters to the editor”

about how drugs and alcohol have impacted family members and friends.

Three students from Patricia Lane’s English class were declared

winners in the contest sponsored by Community Services Programs --

Project PATH in April.

Winners David Dunlap, Agustin Garcia and Dustin Kelter received

certificates of recognition, tickets to a theme park and movie

tickets.

Dunlap, the first-place winner, described how his gifted brother

ended up in jail as a drug addict.

“My brother is a spirited soul, an extraordinary poet, an

accomplished song writer, and has also spent a good half of his life

in prison,” he wrote. “My brother was a strong man but drugs make

people weak.”

Garcia wrote about an abusive father.

“My mother told me that when I was a baby, my father threw me

against a wall,” Garcia wrote. “I just feel sorry for him because he

has wasted all of his life.”

Kelter shared his personal loss of a family friend killed by a

drunk driver.

“She was a great person, too -- one of those girls who is really

focused on her life,” Kelter wrote.

The contest seeks to educate students on the realities of drug use

while empowering them to articulate their views to policymakers and

the media.

Fifth-graders get to work for Hyatt

Fifth-grade students from John R. Peterson Elementary School met

Wednesday at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa in

preparation for the Hyatt Career Day.

The students were fitted for chef, housekeeper and front desk

clerk uniforms.

They will go to orientation and learn the basics of the

hospitality industry.

On May 8, the students will shadow adults working in all aspects

of the resort such as reservation agents, door attendants, engineers

and the general manager, spokesperson Erin Murphy said.

The annual program educates students about opportunities in the

travel and tourism industry.
