Evelyn Bess of Huntington Beach, a vocalist, won the title of Ms.

Senior Orange County in April, and will be competing for the Ms.

Senior California in August ... The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission

named John Riordan Collins of Huntington Beach as a recipient of the

bronze medal, which is given to persons who risk their lives to an

extraordinary degree while saving or attempting to save the lives of

others. In September 1999, Collins attempted to aid Ronald R.

Robertson, who was struggling with an armed man. Robertson was shot

and killed. Collins, with the help of Robertson and another man, was

able to detain the assailant ... Literacy Volunteers-Huntington Beach

Library announced the graduation of 10 new adult literacy tutors

including Marie Furrows of Huntington Beach, Cheryl Hennessey of

Huntington Beach, Emily Molitor of Huntington Beach, Maura Molitor of

Huntington Beach and Carol Williams of Huntington Beach. The library

literacy program helps adults improve their reading and writing

skills ... Marilyn Koeller, a retired administrator from Huntington

Beach, has been named for the Robert E. Kelly Award. The award is

given to a person who has made a significant contribution to the

community on a volunteer basis. Among many other contributions to her

community, Koeller served on the Huntington Harbour Philharmonic

committee, the board of directors for Save Our Kids and councils

college students in the Pathways to Independence program ... Marine

Corps Cpl. Conrad B. Griego, III, son of Angela K. Clitherow of

Huntington Beach, and Marine Corps Lt. Randall L. Horner, brother of

Derek J. Horner of Huntington Beach, have conducted several convoy

operations in Iraq, and began a rebuilding process in the village of

Hasham. The unit also went to the town of Al Rifa, where they removed

large berms put in place by the Iraqi soldiers ... Navy Lt. Charles

P. Good, son of Carol J. and Phillip W. Good of Huntington Beach, is

currently on a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf while

assigned to the guided missile destroyer Fitzgerald ... Navy Petty

Officers Anup R. Patel, son of Rukhi Patel of Huntington Beach, and

Thorin Mayba, son of Perry D. Mayba of Huntington Beach, aboard the

aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, which returns to San Diego from the

Middle East Friday morning.
