Mesa notches first league win

Costa Mesa High freshman opposite Ryan Bagwell had 19 kills and hit

.708 to lead the Mustangs to their first Golden West League boys

volleyball victory Friday night over visiting Westminster.

Bagwell’s performance, which Mustangs Coach Dave Sorrells called

the best by a Mesa attacker in his three seasons at the helm, led to

a 15-12, 15-10, 15-11 sweep of the Lions. Westminster won the first

league meeting with Mesa this spring in five games.

“We really, really needed this win,” Sorrells said. “No matter

what the coach does and no matter how hard the coach works, it’s real

tough to keep the confidence level up, no matter how the kids are

playing, unless you can get a W.”

Senior Danny Krikorian chipped in 10 kills and setter John Santos

collected 33 assists for the winners (2-14, 1-9 in league).

Sorrells also singled out the passing of Darrell Wase.

Sailors sweep Hawks

* The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team did not look past

its opponent Friday in preparation for its Sea View League showdown

with Woodbridge Tuesday.

The Sailors (11-6, 7-1) swept host Laguna Hills, 15-8, 15-2, 15-8,

and dealt the Hawks their eighth straight league loss. Senior Nick

Kelly led Newport with seven kills, while senior Paul Toman and Mike

Toole provided six kills each. Nick Glassic, also a senior for the

Sailors, contributed five kills, and junior setter Adam Schlesinger

recorded 23 assists, three stuff blocks and three service aces.

Junior Jamie Diefenbach played sparingly in preparation for

Woodbridge.

The Sailors, the defending Sea View League champions, will host

the Warriors (8-0 in league) Tuesday at 6 p.m. with the chance to

become league co-champions.

“We just have to eliminate our unforced errors and we have to

fight the whole time,” Newport Coach Dan Glenn said of Tuesday’s

match. “We’re in our home gym. It’s still our league title until

someone takes it away. Hopefully we act like that on the court.”

Lightning falls in three

* Sage Hill School was swept at Academy League leading St.

Margaret’s Friday night, despite another solid performance from

junior Kevin Joyce.

The Lightning fell to 8-6, 6-6 in league, dropping out of the top

three in the league standings.
