Barnett tops Sage Hill qualifiers

Defending Academy League boys shot put champion Braden Barnett led a

host of Sage Hill School athletes to qualify for the finals at the

Academy League boys and girls track and field preliminaries Friday at

Saddleback College.

Barnett, a junior, qualified first in the discus (127 feet, 10

inches) and the shot put (43-0). He is undefeated in both events this

spring and his discus mark Friday topped his previous best by 17

feet.

Sophomore Laura Gordon had a busy day for the Lightning girls,

qualifying second in the long jump (14-4), second in the triple jump

(31-8), third in the 100-meter hurdles (17.4) and third in the 300

hurdles (53.2).

Sophomore Amy Werblin qualified second in the girls shot put

(24-3) and discus (74-3).

Sophomore Kevin Emamian qualified third in the boys long jump

(18-4) and sixth in the 100 (12.0).

Freshman Tim Lefler ran a personal-record 5:09 to qualify seventh

in the boys 1,600, while freshman Kelsey Rose qualified seventh in

the girls 200 (28.2) and eighth in the high jump (4-0).

The nine-school league will reconvene for the finals Friday at

3:30 p.m., also at Saddleback College.

Lightning tops Whitney

* SOFTBALL: Visiting Sage Hill squandered a 3-0 lead, but went on

to claim a 12-3 Academy League softball victory Friday at Whitney .

Catherine Dailey allowed just one hit in five innings to earn her

sixth victory in nine pitching decisions and was also 2 for 4 with

one run and two stolen bases.

Alexa Shitanishi was 2 for 3 with two walks, four stolen bases and

three runs for the winners (9-6, 5-1 in league), who also received

two hits, two stolen bases and three runs from Katrina Redelsheimer.

Mesa holds off Orange

* SOFTBALL: Junior Jane-E Yamamoto threw 4 2/3shutout innings in

relief to help Costa Mesa High’s softball team defeat host Orange,

8-3, in a Golden West League game Friday.

Yamamoto came on with the bases loaded and one out in the third

inning and Orange having trimmed Mesa’s lead to 4-3. But Yamamoto,

5-4 , got a strikeout and groundout to end the inning. Only two

Panthers reached base after the third inning.

Mesa batterscollected nine hits, including senior Ann Marie Topps’

10th home run of the season Uyen Mai singled in two runs in the first

as Mesa (14-9, 6-2 in league) built a 3-0 lead and led off a

three-run seventh inning with a single and later scored on Jennifer

Jordan’s base hit.

Mai went 3 for 3 with two runs scored, two RBIs and six stolen

bases, while Jade Moss doubled en route to going 2 for 3 with two

walks, a run scored, one RBI and a stolen base.

Lightning handle Oxford Academy

* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School boys tennis team closed out its

regular season with a 14-4 Academy League victory over host Oxford

Academy Friday.

Eric Burton and Tristan Codier, as well as the Sage Hill duo of

Mark Ramadan and Ara Dimirijian, swept in doubles, while Ian

Livingston and Dan Chin earned two wins each in singles play. The

Lightning, ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division V, improved

to 9-8, 8-3 in league. Oxford dropped to 7-10, 3-8.

Eagles defeat Lightning

* SWIMMING: Senior Frank Gamboa won two events and achieved a

personal record in the 200-yard freestyle to help lead the Estancia

High boys swim team to an 87-58 nonleague victory over visiting Sage

Hill Friday.

Gamboa won the 100 free (54.37) and the 200 free (2:01.59), in

which he finished three seconds faster than his previous best. Gamboa

also contributed to two of Estancia’s three relay victories, while

sophomore Sean Goodman won the 100 butterfly (1:09.74) and freshman

Chad Kunert won the 500 free (5:30.81).

Estancia closed out the regular season with a 7-4 dual-meet record

and will compete in the Golden West League preliminaries Tuesday at 1

p.m. at Orange.

Vanguard denied in finals at Point Loma

* TENNIS: The Vanguard University men’s and women’s tennis teams

came up short in their respective NAIA Region II championship matches

at Point Loma Nazarene Friday.

In the men’s final, top-seeded Azusa Pacific improved to 22-6 with

a 5-0 victory over Vanguard.

Vanguard’s Carl Lumsden and Carl Holmgren made the All-Region II

team that was announced following the championship match.

The Lions, 15-10 overall and ranked No. 8 in the NAIA, will

receive an at-large berth to the NAIA tournament on May 12-16 in

Peachtree City, Ga.

In the women’s championship match, Vanguard lost, 5-3, to Point

Loma, which is ranked No. 3 in the NAIA. Point Loma won its

fourth-straight Region II championship.

Olga Hlushchanka and Alena Votavova, both sophomores for the

Lions, were named to the eight-member NAIA All-Region II team.

Vanguard, 14-12, qualified for the NAIA National Tournament

(Peachtree City, Ga., on May 12-16) by virtue of an at-large berth,

while Point Loma has earned an automatic berth.

OCC women in lead

* SWIMMING: The Orange Coast College women’s 200-yard medley relay

team of Sherry Tsai, Stephanie Wood, Jennifer Nelson and Sara

Natalizio set a state record with a 1:49.26 clocking Friday in the

second day of the state swimming and diving championships in Pleasant

Hill.

Coast leads with 362.5 points, followed by second-place Diablo

Valley (267), the host of the three-day meet that concludes today.

Tsai, who set a state record in the 100 backstroke Thursday, won

the 200 IM in 2:03.49 Friday, while Nelson touched second in the 50

butterfly (26.20).

Kimberlee Frith, who took second in the 200 freestyle (1:54.56),

teamed with Natalizio, Erica Nicholson and Ashley Lowden to place

second in the 800 free relay (7:56.86).

Tyson Mangham, Roger Wong, Billy Swanson and Tyson Beamer placed

second for Coast’s men’s team in the 200 medley relay (1:38.46) while

Zak Simpson finished second in the one-meter diving (2:69.45). Coast

men trail Diablo Valley by 200 (425-225) through two days.

Mesa wraps up year

* TENNIS: Costa Mesa High’s Huy Pham won two of three sets at No.

2 singles as the hosts lost to visiting Saddleback, 16-2, to wrap up Golden West League boys tennis action Thursday.

Mesa’s David Le won four games each against two of his three

opponents while Mesa’s doubles teams of John Dang-Daniel Gomez and

Albert Nguyen-Andrew Nguyen each won three games during one set.

Mesa finishes the season 0-17, 0-14 in league.

OCC’s Chu advances

* TENNIS: Orange Coast College’s Robert Chu defeated a Riverside

opponent Thursday, 6-4, 6-1, to advance to the Round of 16 in the

Southern California Men’s Community College Regional Tennis

Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

Chu also teamed with Denny Le to defeat a San Diego Mesa team,

6-2, 7-5, before losing in the second round to a College of the

Desert duo, 6-2, 6-0.

OCC’s Chris Trepte and Jared Haley won their first-round match in

three, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, before falling in the second round.
