UC Irvine holocaust memorial defaced

Vandals struck a holocaust memorial at UC Irvine on Monday,

causing temporary damage.

The fence around the temporary memorial set up on Sunday for

Holocaust Remembrance Week was knocked down and a number of

representative tombstones were scattered across Aldrich Park on

campus.

With no leads, but concerned that another incident will occur, UCI

Police have increased security. The vandalism has been labeled

hate-based. Police are still investigating.

Toxic algae bloom kills sea lion

Two more sea lions afflicted by toxic algae bloom swam ashore in

Newport Beach on Wednesday morning, one later dying, officials at the

Friends of the Sea Lion Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach said.

The first one came in at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday near 15th

Street, and the second was found at 10 a.m. near 34th Street, center

officials said. They said one of the sea lions died.

The center is still treating two sea lions that swam ashore near

51st Street on Tuesday. Those animals are still struggling to

survive, officials said.

The animals are all victims of algae that contain lethal biotoxins

that attack the creatures’ brain and central nervous system. Several

dolphins and sea lions were killed last year because of the toxic

algae.
