Mesa View Middle School made a clean sweep in the eighth-grade

division and Marine View did the same at the seventh-grade level as

both schools won two titles at the 2003 Ocean View School District

7/8 Division Track and Field Championships.

The Eagles won both the boys’ and girls’ eighth-grade competition

while the Mariners took the boys’ and girls’ seventh-grade

competition.

In the overall competition, the district title was won by Marine

View, which finished with 122 points.

It was the 10th district title in 11 years for the school.

Mesa View, last year’ overall district champ, was second with 97

points, Vista View came in third with 64 points and Spring View was

fifth with 62 1/2 points.

One meet highlight was turned in by Marine View seventh-grader

Ashley Lampley who set a new district record in the girls’ 100

meters.

Lampley ran a 12.94 in flats, as no starting blocks were used in

the event.

Her time eclipsed the old meet mark that had stood for 28 years

and set in 1975 by Noel Dula, also of Marine View.

Lampley was a triple winner as she claimed the long jump at

13-feet-10 and anchored Marine View’s winning 4 x 100 meter relay

team.

In the seventh-grade boys’ meet, the Mariner’s Tony Leland won the

high jump at 4-10 and the triple jump at 32-6 1/2. Teammate Celso

Arcos also won two events, taking the 400 meters in 1:02.49 and the

800 meters in 2:28.97.

In the eighth-grade girls’ competition, Marine View’s Chelsea

Turner won the triple jump at 27-7 1/2 and the long jump at 13-6. She

was the No. 1 qualifier in the 100 meters but was not able to compete

after breaking her ankle in the long jump event.

Mesa View, with a team consisting of Kristin Thuve, Hope Bielma,

Stephanie Sullivan and Lauren Palacio, won the 4 x 100 meter relay in

a time of 57.43.

Thuve also won the 400 meters in 1:09.25 and the 800 meters in

2:43.57 in an event that saw Mesa View teammate Briana Lott finish

second in 2:45.34.

The Mariners’ Kanh Nguyen won the boys’ eighth-grade long jump

(15-7) and triple jump (34-7 1/2).
