Corona del Mar High senior Nick Sherman came from three shots back

after one day to win by three strokes Thursday at the Pacific Coast

League individual championships at El Prado Golf Course in Chino.

Sherman, who shot 2-over 74 Wednesday, carded a 1-over 73 Thursday

to surge past University senior Neno Boonyaplanun. Sherman, fourth at

league finals last year, was one of six players to advance to the CIF

Southern Regional individual championships, scheduled May 20 at Black

Gold Golf Course in Yorba Linda.

CdM junior Alex Chikovani finished 10th in the two-day PCL

tournament.

Sherman said he picked up five strokes on two holes (13 and 14),

when Boonyaplanun posted back-to-back double bogeys.

“I hit the ball really well today, but I couldn’t make a putt to

save my life,” Sherman said.

CdM Coach Mike Starkweather was less ambivalent.

“I thought he was truly outstanding,” Starkweather said. “He

understands the game of golf and is very aggressive. He went after it

today and I’m very proud of him.”

The Sea Kings, who repeated as PCL champions this season, will

compete as a team in the CIF Southern Region tournament Monday, also

at El Prado.

Sea Kings rout Trojans

* SOFTBALL: Amy Tyson belted a three-run double, Meaghan Bunney

and Sarah Stern each went 2 for 4, and Alissa Zoelle pitched a

complete-game two-hitter to help the Corona del Mar High softball

team solidify its grip on third place with a 10-1 Pacific Coast

League victory over visiting University.

Shortstop Lauren Loe also earned praise from CdM Co-Coach Racie

Giffin as the Sea Kings improved to 9-8, 5-3 in league.

CdM finishes the regular season with games at home against Calvary

Chapel Monday, then at league-leading Northwood Wednesday.

Zoelle struck out three and walked three, blanking the Trojans the

final six innings.

Errors costly for Sailors

* SOFTBALL: The Laguna Hills High softball team scored two runs on

three errors in the third inning to put away visiting Newport Harbor,

2-0, in a Sea View League game Thursday.

The Sailors (9-9, 2-6 in league) got out of the third inning

without any more damage with a 1-3-2 double play.

Newport got another strong defensive play in the bottom of the

sixth, when outfielder Jenny Daniels tracked down a double and

relayed it to shortstop Athena Vasquez. Vasquez fired home to

Julianne Bass, who made the tag at the plate for the final out of the

inning.

Ashley Gleason and Vasquez had the only hits for the Sailors. Kim

Moore took the loss, giving up just three hits, a single, double and

a triple. The Sailors will close out the season next week, playing

host to Woodbridge on Tuesday and Foothill on Thursday.

Sailors trounce Knights

* VOLLEYBALL: Coach Dan Glenn’s Newport Harbor High Sailors swept

Foothill, 15-11, 15-3, 15-11, in the final Sea View League boys

volleyball match of the season Thursday at Newport. The Sailors

(18-11, 9-1 in league) finish as Sea View co-champions with

Woodbridge and await the release of Monday’s CIF Southern Section

playoff pairings.

“The kids are excited,” Glenn said. “We won all of our games in

the second round of league and we have momentum with our first

playoff game [today at 6 p.m. against host Corona del Mar in a

nonleague Back Bay clash]. That’s what I’m telling them, that it’s

our first playoff game, only we get to go on no matter what.”

Junior middle blocker Jamie Diefenbach led the Sailors with 11

kills and three stuff blocks against the Knights (5-5 in league),

while teammates Michael McDonald (eight kills, two service aces),

Mike Toole (seven kills), Paul Toman (five kills, four blocks), Nick

Glassic (four kills, two blocks) and setter Adam Schlesinger (42

assists, four blocks) contributed to the victory.

CdM sweeps Timberwolves

* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team capped

its unbeaten run through the Pacific Coast League Thursday by

sweeping host Northwood, 15-9, 15-10, 15-9.

The Sea Kings (17-10, 10-0 in league), ranked No. 2 in CIF

Southern Section Division II, had 10 kills each from senior middle

blocker Eric Jones and sophomore outside hitter Tom Welch.

Senior Gunnar McClellan added nine kills, while Brandon

Sherick-Odom and Kevin Welch chipped in eight apiece. Setter Greg

Gabriel had 46 assists and nine digs.

Kevin Welch added 12 digs and McClellan had eight for the winners,

who finish out the regular season tonight with their annual Battle of

the Bay against Newport Harbor. CdM hosts the showdown at 6 p.m.

Lightning falls in five

* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School boys volleyball team completed

its regular season with a 15-9, 11-15, 15-7, 13-15, 13-15 loss to

visiting Capistrano Valley Christian Thursday.

Junior Kevin Joyce had 32 kills and four blocks, while junior

Macsun Friederick had 15 kills and eight blocks for the Lightning.

Junior setter Julian Smith-Newman recorded 52 assists for the

Lightning, which fell to 8-8, 6-8 in league.

Eagles edge Lightning

* BASEBALL: Visiting Capistrano Valley Christian High earned an

8-6 win over Sage Hill School Thursday in a seesaw Academy League

baseball clash.

The Lightning seized a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Eagles tied

it in the second, then claimed a 5-1 advantage.

Sage Hill, however, scored five to take the lead in the fifth as

George Dempsey (3 for 3 with two doubles) drove in the go-ahead run.

But CVC tied it in the sixth and scored twice in the seventh to

avenge Tuesday’s 13-9 loss to Sage Hill.

The Lightning, now 13-6, 9-4 in league, closes out the league

season with two games against league-leading Oxford Academy next
