* Tahiti Avenue: A child needed medical aid at Thurston Middle
School when his tongue got stuck in a test tube-shaped candy
container at 10:51 a.m.
* Via Capri: Police took a 39-year-old resident to South Coast
Medical Center after she apparently attempted suicide with a pair of
scissors at around 1 a.m. A neighbor called police when the victim’s
ex-boyfriend said she was drinking heavily and thought she might try
to kill herself. When officers arrived, she had the scissors in her
left hand and a 1 1/2-inch cut across her right wrist. She was put on
a 72-hour hold at the hospital.
MAY 5
* Brooks Street: A 550-pound sea lion was reported beached at
Brooks Street beach, but went back in the water about an hour later
after lying around. Friends of the Sea Lion arrived soon after the
call and said the sea lion looked fine.
* South Coast Highway: A 41-year-old resident reportedly tripped
and hit his head on a concrete planter in front of the Sandpiper at
12:55 a.m. Police saw a puddle of blood by the planter and treated
the head wound. Meanwhile, police found a $250 warrant for littering
for one of the witnesses after running his information.
MAY 4
* Forest Avenue: The Wyland Gallery reported at 5:34 p.m. that a
statue worth $2,800 was stolen during business hours.
* Dartmoor Street: A resident reported that his neighbor regularly
drives his Ferrari between 65 and 100 mph down the street. The
resident wanted police to patrol the area to catch the driver.
* Park Avenue: Police responded to a call from Laguna Beach High
School that a skunk was caught in a net on the baseball diamond.
MAY 3
* South Coast Highway: The Village Gallery reported at 11:30 a.m.
that a 17-inch statue worth $4,500 was stolen during business hours.
* South Coast Highway: Police arrested a San Diego resident on
suspicion of domestic violence after he reportedly punched his
girlfriend in the mouth at the Vacation Village Hotel. Police
responded to a call at around midnight of a fight in progress and
found the 39-year-old victim, also a San Diego resident, with a cut
lip and scratches on her arm. Both said they had been drinking, and
were in town for a wedding the next day.
MAY 2
* Irvine Cove Crest: A resident reported that three “hippie-type”
males were hanging out near the beach at 10:50 a.m. carrying a sign
reading, “We Need a Plase to Live.” They were advised to leave the
area, and they complied.
* Broadway: Police pulled over a Taft resident at around 6:30 p.m.
for crossing double yellow lines and found that his license had been
suspended. A small amount of methamphetamine was found after
searching the car.
* Hillcrest Drive: A 17-year-old Laguna Niguel resident reportedly
tried to evade police after driving around 100 mph on North Coast
Highway at around 2 a.m. Northbound police drove past the southbound
suspect, who reportedly shut off his lights around Emerald Bay when
he saw the officer make a U-Turn to catch him. The suspect turned
onto Viejo Street and finally pulled over at Hillcrest Drive when two
police cars caught up to him. His blood-alcohol level was later found
to be twice the legal limit. “He’s going to lose his license for a
long time,” Sgt. Jason Kravetz said.
APRIL 30
* South Coast Highway: A witness told the owner of a car parked in
the 1100 block that he saw a city bus knock the car’s side mirror
off. Police are checking city buses for paint smears that match the
color of the car.
