In a key match that would determine the Pacific Coast League’s No. 2

entry into the CIF Southern Section Division II volleyball playoffs,

visiting Laguna Beach came back from a game one fiasco to defeat

University, 3-15, 15-10, 15-10, 15-11.

The Breakers and Trojans both finished league play tied for second

place, each with 7-3 records. Laguna, however, will carry the PCL’s

No. 2 seed into tonight’s first-round playoff match by virtue of its

5-4 edge in games won between the two schools this season.

Laguna hosts El Modena at 7 p.m.

Nick Aronoff, Matt Anderson and Talan Torriero played key roles in

Laguna’s comeback victory.

Aronoff had 22 set assists, 15 digs and eight kills. Anderson

topped the Breakers in kills with 19 and Torriero had seven kills and

15 digs.

Jason Kimball added 11 kills.

With its 7-3 league record for the 2003 season, Laguna is now

308-44 in 32 seasons of league play, an .875 winning percentage.

On the baseball diamond Monday, Laguna dropped a 12-4 home game to

University.

Chris Stansbury hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first

inning and the Breakers took a 3-0 lead.

University, however, overtook Laguna in the top of the second by

scoring eight runs, four coming off a grand slam.

The loss dropped Laguna to 5-9 heading into Wednesday’s season

finale at University.

Previously, the Breakers edged visiting Tesoro, 7-6. Junior Aaron

Pickett, in relief of starter Jonathon Cedeno, came away with the

pitching win.

In swimming, Laguna’s girls’ team finished fifth at the PCL finals

and the boys’ squad placed fourth.
