Saida, Warsaw impressive in first round

* Corona del Mar High boys tennis coach Tim Mang made a few

adjustments and discovered what could be an effective doubles team

during the Sea Kings’ 15-3 first-round victory over visiting South

Torrance in the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs Saturday.

The Sea Kings remained undefeated, improving to 20-0.

CdM seniors Issei Saida and Bryan Warsaw played at No. 3 doubles

and swept, recording 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 victories. Saida usually plays

doubles with sophomore Welsey Miller, who competed at No. 2 singles.

“Saida and Warsaw did great together,” Mang said. “They really

came together. That’s going to help us later on in CIF. They were

both hustling and talking to each. That’s a pretty good doubles

team.”

Miller also fared well in singles, as he collected three wins

without dropping a game. Senior Garrett Snyder and sophomore Spencer

Reitz also won three sets in singles and both gave up just one game

each.

“The singles were strong as usual,” Mang said. “That’s the second

time I used Miller in singles and he did well.”

The Sea Kings play in the second round Tuesday, when they will

face Santa Margarita. A coin toss will determine the home team.

Sage wins first playoff

* Sage Hill School went the distance to earn its first playoff win

in the three years of the program.

The Lightning won on games, 81-79, after a 9-9 tie with host

Savanna in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division V

playoffs.

Sage Hill’s No. 3 doubles team of Ian Livingston and Ara Dimirjian

rallied back from a 5-3 deficit in the final set of the day, which

was against Savanna’s No. 2 tandem.

Livingston and Dimirjian also trailed, 5-4, and were facing match

point, but came back to win, 7-5, and tied the match, 9-9.

Eric Burton and Tristan Cordier, playing at No. 1 doubles,

recorded the only sweep of the match for the Lightning (9-7).

“It was definitely a team effort,” Lightning Coach A.G. Longoria

said. “It was exciting. There was a big crowd there. This was our

first playoff win and it was probably our biggest win ever.”

The Lightning, the sixth seed, will face Covina Tuesday. A coin

Sailors bow out

* Junior Charlie Farmer won three sets in singles, but Newport

Harbor lost to host Beverly Hills, 12-5, in the first round of the

CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs Saturday.

Freshman Robert Khoury nearly swept in singles, but lost his first

set in a tiebreaker, 8-6. Newport Harbor ended its season at 9-6.

“We played them pretty tight,” Newport Coach Jeff Thomsen said.

“We just came up a little short in doubles. They were a little more

deeper than us. We had a really good season, the team came together
