Beverly Salata, a longtime Linda Isle resident and wife of

Irrelevant Week founder, died Friday of heart failure. She was 77.

Mrs. Salata loved to perform charity work, her daughter Melanie

Fitch said Friday. She also loved football early on, which worked out

well for her future at USC, where she met Mr. Salata, a former USC

and NFL wide receiver.

Born Nov. 3, 1925, in Los Angeles, Mrs. Salata attended Los

Angeles High School before graduating to USC, where she studied

journalism. It was there that she enjoyed USC football games and

became acquainted with one of the team’s players, Mr. Salata of Mr.

Irrelevant fame in Newport Beach.

The relationship seemed to be a perfect fit, her daughter said.

“Mom had a car, and dad thought that was cool,” she said. “And she

liked football.”

Mrs. Salata, who worked as a flight attendant for United Airlines,

became somewhat of a “beach girl” around that time, Fitch said. It

was then that she moved to Manhattan Beach. Years later, she and Paul

would spend summer days on El Morro Beach in Orange County and then

in Bay Shores, Fitch said.

On Nov. 25, 1951, the Salatas married. They moved to Linda Isle in

1968.

“She was nice,” Fitch said of her mother. “She was well liked in

the community.”

Mrs. Salata is survived by husband Paul; son Bradley; daughter

Melanie Fitch; and two grandchildren, Alix and Marie Fitch.

Services will be held at noon Friday at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian

Church. A reception will follow.
