A special Memorial Day this year

This year’s Memorial Day should not just be another vacation day.

Instead, because of events in Iraq, it should be a day of remembering

and honoring those who have given their lives for our country, this

year and in years gone by.

Before heading out to the barbecue or the beach on Monday, attend

the 11 a.m. memorial service at Harbor Lawn Memorial Park, 1625

Gisler Ave. in Costa Mesa, or the 11 a.m. memorial service at Pacific

View Memorial Park, 3500 Pacific View Drive, Corona del Mar.

Display your American flag proudly on Monday. If you know a

veteran of the armed services, call them and say thank you for the

sacrifice they and their fallen comrades have made.

SALATA HONORED

Newport Beach resident and Irrelevant Week founder Paul Salata was

honored Thursday by the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor. They

presented Salata with the Book of Golden Deeds award.

Award chairman Garry TeWinkle introduced Salata, acknowledging his

USC football experience and his professional football career with the

San Francisco 49ers, the Baltimore Colts, the Pittsburgh Steelers and

the Calgary Canadian Football League team.

“Rarely do we have an opportunity to be so close to someone so

great,” said Dan Rogers, Goodwill president and chief executive, who

paid tribute to Salata as part of the program.

Exchange Club member Dean Bottorf played the keyboard and wrote

the lyrics to five songs that spoofed Salata’s career in sports, the

sewer business and as a master of ceremonies at community

fund-raisers and events.

The Book of Golden Deeds plaque that Salata received was inscribed

in part with “for relevant charitable work and the fun of

irrelevance.”

LIONS WIN AWARDS AND HONORS

The Harbor Mesa Lions were well represented at the Lions’ District

4L4 convention in Oxnard, with 15 members attending.

Member Barbara Hayward was elected district vice president, and

the club was awarded “Visitation Club of the Year,” “Padre Award” and

the “Club Spirit Award.”

Member Karen Lamas received the Multiple District Award for

Leadership. Member Marian Perrin was presented with a crystal bowl

inscribed with her new title of “Director Emeritus of the Lion’s

Sight and Hearing Foundation” from President Mike Scheafer.

District Gov. Chuck Overbey presented member Marianne Allen with

the Harry S. Aslan Award for her work with the Student Speaker

Contest. From the Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lion’s Club, Scheafer

received the International President’s Leadership Award.

The Lion’s Fish Fry Baby Contest still has openings for

contestants living in the area.

Mesa on June 1. Judging will be done at 1 p.m. The stage presentation

will be held at 2 p.m.

UFO DOCUMENTARY DISCUSSION

The nonprofit Mutual UFO Network of Orange County features Newport

Beach resident Bob Wood, who will show and comment on the production

of a recently aired TV special called “The Secret” on Wednesday at

the Costa Mesa Community Center, 1845 Park Ave.

“The real secret is the remarkable success of the deception of the

public,” Wood said. He will present evidence for the existence of a

covert crash recovery program. For more information, call (714)

520-4UFO (4836) or visit the Web site at www.mufonoc.org.
