Students will compete in engineering event

More than 500 middle and high school students from schools in

Anaheim and Compton will test their engineering capabilities at a

“Learning with LEGOs” competition at UC Irvine on Saturday.

Those students, who have participated in the competition, are

participants in the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement

Program, and have spent the past month working on their individual

projects. Learning about structural engineering and architecture, the

students have built aesthetically pleasing and resilient structures

that will be tested on the university’s shake table.

Winners will be selected based on how their structures, made out

of LEGOs, are affected by the vertical, horizontal and rolling

effects experienced during an earthquake.

The competition, organized by UCI’s Department of Civil and

Environmental Engineering, will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Saturday in the Structural Engineering Test Hall in the National Fuel

Cell Research Center building on the UCI campus.
