Professors earn statewide recognition

In May, two Golden West College professors earned recognition and

statewide awards for their efforts toward improving education.

Golden West College English professor, Dibakur Barua, was honored

by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors with the John

W. Rice Award for Diversity and Equality on May 5.

“He is known for his efforts to make his department more

reflective of the diversity that exists in our country,” said Ken

Yglesias, president of Golden West College.

The award recognizes significant contributions to faculty

diversity and student equality. Barua was chosen for his commitment

to promoting diversity within the college through his roles as

president of the academic senate and chair of the English department.

At a board meeting held May 15, professor of chemistry, Carol

Grimes, was presented with the “Outstanding Contributions to

Education Award,” by the Orange County Board of Education and William

Habermehl, county superintendent of schools.

Grimes, a professor since 1977 and the coordinator of the regional

science Olympiad tournament, was recognized for her contributions

toward student success and education.

Golden West graduation tonight

The Golden West College annual commencement ceremony is set for 6

p.m. tonight in the center quad. The 2003 graduating class will

receive 789 associate in arts degrees, including 123 honor school recognitions and 272 certificates of achievement.

The commencement speaker is Keith Yamashita, founder and principal

of Stone Yamashita Partners in San Francisco. A strategist and

writer, Yamashita and his firm work with clients such as America

Online, Disney, Nike and Hewlett-Packard to promote innovation.

The R. Dudley Boyce Outstanding Student Award will be awarded to

Keri Dawn Jubran, president of the associated students of Golden West

College. Jubran has served on many college committees including the

Instructional Planning Team, President’s Administrative Council and

the Golden West College Foundation and aspires to become a certified

public accountant and an FBI agent.

More than 2,000 students, faculty and community members are

expected to attend the ceremony.

Golden West summer schedule changes

Golden West College has altered its summer schedule and hours in

an effort to save the costs of utilities.

The Coast Community College District Board of Trustees approved

the new schedule, which will affect its three community colleges.

Summer sessions at Golden West College will start June 2 and end

Aug. 17. With the exception of some buildings, the college will be

open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will be closed

on Fridays.

Hope View carnival is set to go off

Hope View School will hold its annual carnival, “Ride the Hope

View Wave,” from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. on June 6.

This year’s event will have a surf theme including a live surf

band, food, a raffle and a dance contest.

The school is accepting raffle item donations. Proceeds will go

toward new assemblies and programs. For more information, call (714)
