Lincoln’s fifth- and sixth-grade boys soccer team recorded its second

shutout in as many games, defeating Prince of Peace, 6-0, Thursday in

Pool H of the Daily Pilot Cup at the Costa Mesa Farm Complex.

Sixth-grader Hunter Lewis made a spectacular save in the closing

minutes, leaping up and tipping the ball over the post to secure his

second scoreless venture. Lewis finished with three saves.

“That’s why he’s in there,” Lincoln Coach Frederick Welch said.

Lincoln, which has only three sixth graders on the team, defeated

Mariners 2, 3-0, on Wednesday and will play Victoria in its final

pool-play game at 6:45 p.m. today at Costa Mesa High.

Tyler Kraing gave Lincoln a 1-0 lead early in the match taking a

give-and-go to the net for the score. Minutes later, after

fifth-grader Michael Chester made a diving save for Prince of Peace,

Ryan Peyton drilled a shot from outside the box over the head of

Chester for a 2-0 lead at the half.

Maybe it was Principal Barbara Rothman’s incentive of extra recess

for the entire school if the team wins the title that kept Lincoln on

fire in the second half, scoring four more goals. Lincoln won the

third- and fourth-grade division title two years ago.

Reid Williams made it, 3-0, on a long blast from the corner of the

box and Nick Taormina followed a minute later, making it 4-0.

Chester was kept busy in the goal for Prince of Peace, racking of

eight saves, but Lincoln’s offense was too much.

Harrison Rolfes through a perfect inbound pass down the line to

Luke Christiano, who took it the rest of the way and curled a shot

into the net for a 5-0 lead. Christian St. Clair rounded out the

scoring with a shot up the middle.

In other boys 5-6 action:

* St. Joachim 4, Davis No. 1 2: Jose Faborneno scored both goals

for Davis No. 1, which lost its second Pool C contest. Davis Coach

Deena Franko, a sixth-grade teacher at Davis, said her team improved

since the first game.

* Newport Heights No. 1 0, Kaiser No. 2 0: Kaiser goalie Scott

Ward earned the shutout at the Farm Complex.

* Rea No. 1 8, Newport Elementary 0: Edgar Vega and Jorge Olivas

each tallied two goals with Rodrigo Rubacaba, Enrique Ocampo, Genaro

Lopez and Christian Celis each netting single goals for the shutout

in Pool A action at the Farm Complex.

Aran Antunez and Mario Cuamatzi split time in goal for Rea No. 1.

* Rea No. 2 1, Andersen 1: For the second consecutive game, Jesus

Hernandez scored Rea’s only goal. His latest goal came Thursday in a

Pool E game at Costa Mesa High against Andersen. Hernandez headed off

a corner kick to tie Andersen with four minutes remaining.

Hernandez scored the lone goal for Rea Wednesday in a 1-1 tie

against Harbor Day 1.
