Less is Moore for Harbor Day

COSTA MESA -- It took a little more than 15 minutes in the second

half, but the Harbor Day third- and fourth-grade boys soccer team

eventually broke through Eastbluff’s defense. The Harbor Day Seahawks

scored three goals in the second half, mainly because they, “came

together as a team,” co-coach Bob Gorab said.

Harbor Day’s newfound team chemistry helped overcome the loss of

one of its best players and led to a 5-2 Pool G victory over

Eastbluff. Willie Moore netted a hat trick for the victorious

Seahawks, who defeated Adams, 10-0, Wednesday. Colton Gyulay scored

four goals in that win over Adams, but he had to play for his Little

League baseball game Thursday.

Enter Moore.

He scored once in the first half, and added Harbor Day’s final two

goals, as the Seahawks broke away from a 2-2 halftime tie.

“In the second half, the wind was at our backs,” said Gorab, who

coached Harbor Day along with Rob Case. “I just think in the second

half that our kids started to play together better.”

Eastbluff and Harbor Day played evenly in the first half, trading

goals throughout the first 25 minutes. Jack Gorab scored first for

the Seahawks, heading in a cornerkick from Moore. Then, five minutes

later, Brett Thompson got Eastbluff on the scoreboard.

Blake Thompson answered for Harbor Day shortly after Moore’s

cornerkick to put the Seahawks back up, 2-1. However, just before the

half ended Jack Nowak scored for Eastbluff, even though the Seahawks’

goalie had a hand on the ball.

Eastbluff displayed solid defense through most of the second half.

Goalie Christian Ball, the younger brother of Cameron and Carsten of

Corona del Mar High tennis notoriety, recorded 10 saves in the second

half for Eastbluff.
