Costa Mesa Police Chief receives award

Costa Mesa Police Chief David Snowden was awarded the Sherman

Block Law Enforcement Professional of the Year Award on May 20. The

California Peace Officers Assn. presents the annual award.

Named after former Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block, the

prestigious award recognizes California law enforcement professionals

who have distinguished themselves through dedicated service to their

departments, their community and to their field of work.

Snowden, who has served as Costa Mesa’s police chief for the last

16 years, said he is “honored” by the award.

Snowden’s last day as chief will be June 13. He will be succeeded

by John D. Hensley, currently Cypress’ police chief.

Save Our Youth director resigns for new job

Oscar Santoyo, director of Save Our Youth, has resigned to work

for the Boys and Girls Club of San Juan Capistrano.

Santoyo has been with the Westside Costa Mesa program for almost

10 years. He developed many programs like the Latino Youth

Conference, basketball and baseball tournaments and an innovative

scholarship program.

The organization celebrated its 10-year anniversary in April. SOY

offers recreational, social, academic and health and fitness

activities for youths 11 to 17. Under Santoyo’s leadership, it did it

all on a budget of less than $130,000 per year.

Concert tickets for county fair are on sale

Tickets for concerts by Steely Dan, Juan Gabriel, Marco-Antonio

Solis, Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith at the Pacific Amphitheatre are

on sale. The amphitheater will feature 21 shows during the Orange

County Fair between July 11 and Aug. 3.

They will also be available at the Orange County Fair box office.

Concert ticket prices include fair admission. Gates open 90 minutes

Parent Help USA host open house Thursday

Parent Help USA will host an Open House and Members Mixer on

Thursday in its office at 330 West Bay St., Suite 120, Costa Mesa.

The evening will include a tour of the new facility and an

auction. A swing dance exhibition will also be featured.

Proceeds from the event will go toward reopening the group’s food

bank.

The group is also calling for volunteers to serve hors d’oeuvres

and dinner for the evening.
