National father/son event on tap at NBTC

Fittingly, the ninth annual United States Tennis Association national

senior father and son championships will take place Father’s Day

weekend at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

The USTA-sanctioned event will feature 35 teams in the senior

(fathers 60 and older) and the super senior (70 and older) divisions

when play begins June 13.

The father-son doubles duo of Gordon and Scott Davis, the director

of tennis at NBTC, will attempt to win its third straight title while

Larry and son John Huebner will team up again this year. Larry and

John won the title in 2001 while Larry teamed with his other son,

Jim, to claim the championship last year.

Play begins Friday at 10:15 p.m. The super senior division

features 19 doubles teams while the senior division has 16 entered.

Each team is guaranteed two best-of-three set matches.

Saturday’s matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. with Sunday play

scheduled to start at 9 a.m.

The finals for the super senior division will be at 10:45 a.m.

while the senior title match will begin at 12:30 p.m. Playoffs for

third and fourth place will also be held Sunday morning.

Palisades Tennis Club hosted its second annual “Sexiest Guys of

the Palisades” at the club Wednesday with a new champion as voted on

by the women in attendance.

O.B. Baez took first place while Steve Hodge came in second with

Jerry Van Linge, Phil Ruland and Robin Walker coming in a tie for

third.

Others competitors vying for the title included: Jono Fears,

Parker Collins, Christian Jensen, Glen Morton, Sandy McDougal, Biz

Houssels, Russell Ayres, Larry Sherwin, Brad Smith, Steve Vaughn and

Andy Bartlett.

Collins, a former Corona del Mar High tennis standout who won

Palisades’ inaugural “Sexiest Guy” competition, teamed with

USC-teammate Daniel Langre to win the Pac-10 doubles championship at

the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament in April.

Members and nonmembers ages 6-17 can attend tennis camps at

Newport Beach Tennis Club beginning with the first of 10 sessions,

June 23.

Each session will meet Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1

p.m. with a snack and lunch provided.

Session dates run as follows: June 23-27, June 30-July 3, July

7-11, July 14-18, July 21-25, July 28-Aug. 1, Aug. 4-8, Aug. 11-15,

Aug. 18-22 and Aug. 25-29.

Each group will be limited to six students and arranged according

to age and ability level. Lessons will include drills, court

etiquette and attention to fundamentals.

The NBTC teaching staff, under the direction of Dave Sherbeck,

will instruct all classes.

Per session fees for an individual player cost $235. Included in

the cost are T-shirts and campers have the opportunity to swim in the

pool from 1 to 3 p.m. daily under supervision.
