Mesa trio selected all-league

Costa Mesa High senior Robert Rodriguez, who hit .500 against Golden

West League competition, tops three Mustangs chosen all-league by the

circuit’s baseball coaches.

Rodriguez, Mesa’s lone first-team pick, was 17 for 34 against

Golden West pitching, with one home run ad eight RBIs. The third

baseman also scored eight times and stole one base.

Junior pitcher Justin Peterson and sophomore shortstop Alex

Pisarski are second-team honorees.

Peterson was 2-3 in league with a 3.00 ERA. He struck out 45 in 35

innings and did not allow a home run in Golden West play.

Pisarski batted .359 in league (14 for 39) with two doubles, two

triple and four RBIs. He scored nine times and added one stolen base.

Phil Hann from Ocean View and Dale Gamo from Westminster share

Most Valuable Player honors, while Robert Carey of Westminster and

Grant Theophilus of Ocean View are Co-Pitchers of the Year.

Friedrichs, Wilkins are first-team selections

* Sage Hill School senior Zach Friedrichs and junior Tim Wilkins

have been named first-team All-Academy League by the circuit’s

baseball coaches.

Junior Jordan Salinger and sophomore Matt Loper are second-team

picks.

Friedrichs, a pitcher and shortstop, hit .443 with one home run

and 33 RBIs to help the Lightning reach the CIF Southern Section

Division V playoffs, their first trip to the postseason in the

program’s two varsity seasons. He also earned two pitching victories

and had a 2.24 ERA, striking out 58 in 50 innings. He was a

second-team all-league choice as a junior.

Wilkins, a repeat first-team selection, hit .400 with two homers

and 14 RBIs. He also posted a 5-2 pitching record with one save and a

3.44 ERA, fanning 54 in 36 2/3 innings.

Loper, a pitcher and infielder, won six of his eight decisions and

also recorded a save in 35 innings on the mound. In addition, his 21

RBIs ranked second on the team.

Salinger, an outfielder who hit leadoff for the Lightning, batted

.323 with one homer and 10 RBIs for first-year coach Bert Emerson.

Cantarella Harbor’s first-team honoree

* Newport Harbor High junior Joe Cantarella has been chosen

first-team All-Sea View League by the circuit’s baseball coaches.

Cantarella, the lone Sailor recognized, earned two of the Tars’

three league victories on the mound, finishing with a 3.00 ERA in 46

2/3 innings against Sea View competition.

Cantarella, who had four of his team’s eight victories this

spring, also hit a team-best .269 in league with three doubles and

seven runs.

Foothill junior Phil Hughes, who led the Knights to the league

title, is the Player of the Year.
