THE DISTRICT

Here are some of the decisions coming out of Tuesday’s school

board meeting.

TENTATIVE BUDGET MEETING

According to California education codes, the school district’s

Board of Trustees must hold a public meeting on the budget for the

subsequent fiscal year. Although the state has not approved its

budget, Newport-Mesa Unified will present a tentative version for the

2003-04 school year at the meeting. During the meeting, Newport-Mesa

residents may present their objections to the budget or any of its

items. The board cannot adopt a budget until after the public meeting

is held.

WHAT HAPPENED

The school board approved the proposal to hold a public meeting

presenting the All Funds Tentative Budget. The meeting is scheduled

for 7:05 p.m. June 24 at the district offices.

API AWARDS -- EXPENDITURE PLANS

The Governor’s Performance Award Program provides monetary awards

to staff and school sites for their achievements of various targets

on the Academic Performance Index. Funds have been distributed to the

various school sites based on the 2001-02 carry-over and the first

and second installments for the 2002-03 funding. Expenditures of

those funds should be decided by a school site council and must be

approved by the school board.

WHAT HAPPENED

The board approved the expenditure plans for the Public Schools

Accountability Grant as presented.

SUMMER BOARD MEETING SCHEDULE

To allow staff and trustees time for vacation during the summer

months, staff recommended that the board approve a revised summer

schedule eliminating meeting dates on July 22 and Aug. 12.

WHAT HAPPENED

The board approved the schedule, allowing for the board president

to call additional special meetings, if needed.
