Newport bank raises funds through triathlon

A Newport Beach-based real estate investment bank finished a

fund-raising triathlon on Friday that began in Big Bear and ended at

Main Beach in Laguna Beach. Buchanan Street Partners then presented a

$153,000 check to the United Way at the reception in Hotel Laguna.

Each member of the 40-person firm competed in at least a portion

of the 2.4-mile swim in Big Bear Lake, the 112-mile bike ride or the

26.2-mile marathon. Everyone ran the last mile.

“We have struck upon an excellent balance of making a significant

contribution to the local community while offering our employees an

important team-building experience,” said Robert Brunswick, president

of the bank. “I’m very proud of what these dedicated people have

accomplished.”

Brunswick was the first of six to dive into Big Bear Lake at 6

a.m. and one of five to complete the entire icy swim -- without

wetsuits.

The Buchanan Street Foundation began three years ago to raise

funds for children’s charities near Newport and two other communities

where the company has offices. This year’s contributions nearly

tripled the first year’s take, said Randy Hall, director of

marketing.

The United Way will distribute the $153,000 to four charities.

Maria Wilcox, president of Orange County’s United Way, said she

appreciates Buchanan Street Partners’ efforts.

“Their commitment of time and money helps make a real difference

in the lives of many children,” Wilcox said.

Employees raised funds through donations from clients, members of

the financial community, friends and family, and chipping in their

own money.
