Surf City annual 5K Run and Expo -- The run will take place during

the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast beginning at 6 a.m. before the Fourth

of July Parade begins. It includes entertainment, family fun,

refreshments and fitness products in the Expo Village. The Residents

5K Run/Walk begins at 7 a.m.; the Open 5K Run/Walk at 8 a.m.; the 5K

Stroller Run at 8:30 a.m.; and the Thomas Kemper Soda Kids 1-Mile Run

Serena Brooke Day Surf Camp and Amateur Competition -- World-class

surfer Serena Brooke will lend her talents to a day of fun for

females of all ages from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the north side of

Huntington Beach Pier at Pacific Coast Highway and 9th Street.

Registration includes surfing lessons or entry in an amateur surf

competition plus breakfast and lunch provided by Duke’s, a T-shirt

and a goody bag. The cost is $40 until July 18. After July 18,

Huntington Beach Playhouse presents -- “Quilters” will be

presented at the Central Library Theater. By Molly Newman and Barbara

Damashek, with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, it is a joyous and moving

celebration of American womanhood that pays eloquent tribute to the

courage and spirit of one of our nation’s pioneer women and her six

daughters. “Quilters” blends a series of interrelated scenes

capturing the terror, joy, harsh challenges and abiding rewards of

frontier life. Illuminating stories are contained in the patches, or

quilt blocks, with music, dance and drama. In the end, the various

patches are assembled into a brilliantly colorful quilt, creating a

Pro beach volleyball -- The Assn. of Volleyball Professionals will

host the second “On the Beach” Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament, which

will be broadcast on NBC. Come down to the beach to be seen as the

AUG. 16 to 17

Pacific Offshore Race -- Contestants will set sail at 11 a.m. at

Peter’s Landing Marina on Pacific Coast Highway. The parking lot in

front of Peter’s Landing will be full of vendors and the Dry Pits for

some awesome boats. Race courses, which vary by location, are

approximately 5 to 7 miles long. Racers run in continuous loops,

around check points marked by buoys and must negotiate turns between

30 and 300 yards of the buoys. The length of the race varies by

class, with Super Cat and Super Vee running approximately 100 miles,

and each smaller class boats running slightly fewer laps and miles.

Points are awarded to each boat for each race completed, according to

the order of finish. Points are tabulated at the season end, to name

the overall National High Points Champion in each class. Information:

AUG. 23

The 40th annual Huck Finn Fishing Derby -- Children 15 and younger

are invited to get out their best Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher

clothes and grab their fishing poles to win prizes in costume and

fishing competitions from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration is free and

begins at 8 a.m. at the end of the pier. Participants must bring

Huntington Beach Civil War Reenactment -- Taking place in Central

Park east, near Talbert Avenue and Goldenwest Street, this vivid

display of life in the 1800s includes costumed actors, encampments,

two battles per day with cannon fire and displays, music and booths

selling books and clothing and other items of interest.

Classic boats race from the dock of Newport Harbor Museum while

events take place in and around the museum from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at

the Heritage Regatta and Seaport Festival. Classic woodies, surfing

exhibits, boat building, model building, food and music will be on

all day at the museum and will include a luau dinner and awards show.

summer, including a two-hour barbecue before the movies start at
