Rotary searches for peace scholars

Rotary International is offering 70 scholarships worth up to $50,000

to mid-career professionals interested in obtaining a master’s degree

in peace and conflict resolution at one of seven prestigious

universities in six different countries.

“Potential candidates for this scholarship include individuals who

work for non-government organizations involved in human rights,

disaster relief, aid distribution, environmental advocacy, refugee

issues and other issues related to peace and international

cooperation,” said Michael Abdalla, chairman of the Peace Scholar

Committee for Rotary District 5320, which includes 50 Rotary Clubs in

Orange County and Southern Los Angeles County.

Candidates can also be men and women working for government

agencies, such as departments of state, foreign ministries,

diplomatic corps, or other groups of civil servants, as well as

international volunteer agencies and mediation, arbitration and

dispute resolution groups.

“Successful candidates in the first class of scholars include

journalists, ecologists, a peace consultant, and a graduate student

studying nuclear waste management and proliferation issues, among

others,” Abdalla added.

To learn more about this scholarship, go to the Rotary

International Web site, www.rotary.org, click on “RI Programs” and

then the link “Programs of the Rotary Foundation.” Under Educational

Programs, open “Rotary World Peace Scholarships.”

There, you will be able to learn more about the scholarship, view

the bios of successful candidates and download an application form.

Abdalla indicates information on the scholarship is available from

any one of the 50 Rotary Clubs in District 5320 or by calling the

district office at (949) 660-0001.

SIX O’CLOCKERS

The Balboa Bay Club Six O’clockers, a loosely knit group of men

who gather daily in the BBC’s men’s spa for coffee, cards, some

exercise, showers and shaves, attended Beverly Salata’s memorial

service at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church on Friday, May 30, to

support their good friend, Paul Salata.

The Rev. John Huffman presided over the service, which was

attended by nearly 800 family and friends of Beverly and Paul. Thanks

to the leadership of member Marshall Stuart, the Six O’clockers have

donated more than $1,000 that will be given to Special Olympics in

Beverly’s memory.

GOLF UPDATE

Yes, I did play 18 holes of golf in the Good Shepherd Communities

Golf Classic held at Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park on

Monday. Newport Beach psychotherapist Rick Nyberg hosted Elliot

Sainer of Aspen Education Group, ringer Mike Walsh of RAM Supply and

myself were one of 33 teams to enjoy a day golf, dinner and auctions.

While I didn’t hit anyone on the course, I had a couple of bad

drives until I settled down. On our first tee, I hit the ball into

the golf cart and on its bounce, it landed at the women’s tee. A few

holes later, we came to the hole-in-one par 3 for the new Sterling

BMW, when my divot from my swing knocked my ball off the tee, causing

a lot of laughter among my fellow golfers.

My game did pick up as the day went on, and we had a fun time

together and met a number of the clients of Good Shepherd who were

staffing tables along the course, and handing out soft drinks,

brownies and hugs.

At the tournament dinner, Pam McCrea, chief executive of Good

Shepherd Communities, kept her comments short and asked the audience

to join her, if they knew it, in saying the reason why Good Shepherd

Communities exist.

They said in unison: “Helping people with developmental

disabilities live life to the fullest, with dignity.” A powerful

statement, a successful program, one well worth supporting.
