Carjacking suspect

arrested in Irvine

Police arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of attempted

carjacking against two Newport Beach residents and vandalism Friday

morning.

The Irvine Police Department arrested David Kyung Moon Choo at

about 11:51 a.m. Friday, after he allegedly committed two attempted

carjackings in the Mother’s Market parking lot at the intersection of

Jamboree Road and Michelson in Irvine, police said.

The incidents allegedly occurred after Choo refused to pay the

parking attendant and drove through two gates before trying to flee

on foot. Police said that witnesses then saw him approach a

30-year-old man driving a Lexus and, holding a knife, demanded that

the man give him his car. The driver, a Newport Beach resident,

backed up his car and drove off, witnesses said.

Following that incident, Choo allegedly approached a 60-year-old

woman, a resident of Newport Coast, and, still holding a knife,

threatened her life and demanded she give him the keys to her Lexus,

police said. The woman then locked her doors and attempted to flee as

Choo allegedly began kicking her fender and slashing it with his

knife before two officers arrested him.

Officers booked Choo into the Orange County jail.

Passengers halted after security breach

John Wayne Airport had a temporary security breech Saturday

afternoon, after an individual managed to walk around the screening

terminal.

At about 1:47 p.m. Saturday, Orange County Sheriff’s Department

officers and airport officials shut down the airport until the

security breech was resolved. Planes were temporarily grounded and

passengers were deplaned and re-screened before flights resumed.

Airport officials declined to comment on the incident.
