The fields for the 101st annual Southern California Tennis

Association junior sectional championships shrunk in half Wednesday,

with one local top seed advancing and two local doubles teams sent

packing by the top seeds in their respective divisions.

Top-seeded Nelly Radeva of Costa Mesa cruised to a victory in

girls 12s, defeating Colette Aglanyan, 6-0, 6-1. Newport Beach’s

Jillian Braverman was also victorious in 14s, defeating Corona del

Mar’s Alexandria Walters, 6-1, 6-1.

Brittany Holland, of Corona del Mar, didn’t have the same success.

She fell, 7-5, 6-1 to Celia Durkin to drop into the loser’s bracket

of the girls 18s competition.

There were four singles matches Wednesday involving boys with

local ties and the results were split.

Kaes Van’t Hof earned himself a date with the No. 3 seed in 18s by

knocking off Stanley Sarapanich, 7-5, 7-6. Three others were involved

in the 16s competition, but only one made it to the round of 16. That

was sixth-seed Carsten Ball of Newport Beach who defeated Trevor

Dobson, 7-5, 6-2, to advance. Falling into the consolation bracket

were Costa Mesa’s Wes Burrows, who fell, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, to Mike

Gurman, and Newport Beach’s Robert Khoury, who dropped a 6-3, 6-0

decision to Shan Sondhu.

Sondhu also had a hand in knocking Newport Beach’s Tyler Deck out

of the doubles competition. Shan and Raji Sondhu defeated Deck and

partner Blake Meister, 6-3, 6-3.

After Van’t Hof emerged victorious in his singles match, he went

directly into doubles competition and was upset by Cale Planck and

Jonathan Tragardh, 7-6, 6-1. Van’t Hof and partner Chase Mueller were

the sixth seed but couldn’t reach the quarterfinals.

Two other doubles teams with local ties succumbed to No. 1 seeds.

Charlie Farmer of Newport Beach and Corona del Mar’s Robert Koury

fell to top-seeded Gary Sacks and Brandon Wai, 6-1, 6-4, in the boys

18s, while Newport Coast’s Juliet Mutzke and partner Alex Jurewitz

couldn’t overcome the top seed in the girls 18s, losing to Danon

Beatty and Jessica Ngyuen, 6-2, 6-1.

Action resumes today in both the main draw and the consolation

brackets.
