It’s good to be seeded

Only the seeded ones remain.

For youth tennis players from the Newport-Mesa area it helped to

have a seeding next to your name at the 101st annual Southern

California Tennis Association junior sectional championships

Thursday.

Three area players advanced to today’s quarterfinals and each of

them carry a high seeding. Those that were still in the main draw and

didn’t carry a seed, which included three locals, were knocked into

the consolation bracket, while one seeded local was upset and sent

there as well.

Top-seeded Nelly Radeva of Costa Mesa continued to roll in the

girls 12s, knocking off Haley Dixon of Canyon Lake 6-2, 6-2. Radeva

will meet her first seeded opponent today, No. 8 Catherine Isip at

Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley at 3:30 p.m.

Newport Beach’s Jake Fleming, the third seed in boys 14s, was a

6-3, 6-0 winner over Christopher Brown. He will face Rancho

Cucamonga’s Mark Martinez in the quarterfinals today at 3:30 p.m.

Martinez upset the No. 8 seed in the round of 32.

Carsten Ball, the sixth-seed in boys 16s, was an easy 6-1, 6-0

victor against Alex Krueger-Wyman of Pasadena. The Newport Beach

resident will face third-seeded Stefan Hardy today at 12:30 p.m.

The only upset came when Justin Jenkins of Laguna Niguel knocked

off No. 8 Charlie Alvarado, of Costa Mesa, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, in the boys

12s competition.

The three unseeded players to fall out of the main draw were all

done in by a ranked opponent.

Kaes Van’t Hof lost 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 to No. 3 Gary Sacks in the boys

18s. In the girls 14s, Jillian Braverman fell to No. 1 Leyla

Entckhabi 6-1, 6-1. Newport Beach’s Ryan Caughren lost to No. 2 Steve

Forman in boys 14s, 6-2, 6-2.

All three players will participate in the consolation brackets

today.

Still alive in the consolation brackets in their respective

divisions are four players who posted victories Thursday.

In boys 16s, Wes Burrows defeated Benjamin Tom, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, and

Robert Khoury wa a 6-3, 7-6 winner over Christopher Kearny. Brittany

Holland advanced in the girls 18s consolation bracket with a 6-0, 6-2

win over Jennifer Segar and Alexandria Walters was a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1

winner over Jordan Dockendorf in girls 14s.
