Arts commissioner should be an artist

Unfortunately your story “Commissioners appointed,” (Coastline Pilot,

June 20) doesn’t mention that incumbent arts commissioner artist Joan

Corman was not reappointed.

The reason I point this out is that there should always be

representation from the arts community on the commission. This is

important not only because of their unique perspective as creative

people in the arts, but also such things as art background, including

education and often teaching as well as being jurors. They know how

the system works!

Arts commissioners are not expected to have large financial

resources as are board members of museums and other arts

organizations.

However, there are still the dangers nepotism possible which can

take precedence over sound judgment. I certainly hope that people

less qualified than Joan Corman have not been appointed.
