Fireworks back for Fourth

Tuesday through Friday, you will be able to purchase fireworks from

the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions Club at the Del Taco at 17th and

Newport Boulevard, as well as at dozen of other stands throughout

Costa Mesa. But remember, fireworks are permitted in Costa Mesa, not

in Newport Beach.

From 7 to 11 a.m. Friday morning, the Fourth of July, stop by the

America Legion Post 291 at 215 E. 15th St. in Newport for the annual

Pancake Breakfast. The cost is $5 per person, Legion member Ed Demaro

said. At 1 p.m., find a spot along Newport Harbor so you can take in

the colorful annual Character Boat Parade sponsored by the American

Legion, with this year’s theme of honoring the U.S. armed services.

The 44th annual Fireworks Extravaganza will return to the Newport

Dunes Waterfront Resort after a one-year absence, thanks to

additional support from the city of Newport Beach, the Newport Beach

Chamber of Commerce and Fletcher Jones Motorcars. The Fireworks

Extravaganza begins at 9 p.m. It can be watched from the bay and the

hills and bluffs surrounding the Dunes. In addition to providing the

location for the evening fireworks display, the Newport Dunes is

conducting daylong activities on their resort property area off

Jamboree Road and Pacific Coast Highway.

Enjoy the holiday. Stay safe and sane.

GOLF FOR KIWANIS

The Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club is sponsoring a golf tournament on

Monday, Sept. 22, at the Mesa Linda Golf Course in Costa Mesa.

Proceeds will benefit the Westside branch of the Harbor Area Boys and

Girls Club.

The price is $75 for golf, tee prizes, cart and dinner afterward

at the Newport Rib Co.

Best ball is the format. The tournament is limited to the first 60

players. The first tee time is 11 a.m. For more information or to

register, contact Charles Markel at (949) 642-6438.

PACIFIC COAST TRIATHLON

The sixth annual Pacific Coast Triathlon will be held Saturday and

Sunday, July 19 and 20 at Crystal Cove State Park. Two races will be

held over the weekend, said Bob Cuyler, event chair.

On Saturday, an Olympic Distance Professional race with 150

athletes from around the world will be featured. On Sunday, the USAT

Regional Sprint Distance Championship will feature more than 1,500 of

the best age groupers in the United States.

Volunteers are needed to help with parking, traffic control and

communications. Proceeds from the event go to local charities. More

information can be obtained by calling Cuyler at (949) 646-5611.
