Terry Boesel, a head coach for five seasons at La Verne University,

has been named assistant men’s basketball coach at UC Irvine, the

school announced Tuesday.

Boesel, 41, replaces Mike Johnson, who was hired Monday as an

assistant at USC.

Boesel had a 63-60 record in two separate stints at La Verne, the

most recent being the last two seasons. He also coached the Leopards

from 1995-98, before leaving to become an assistant at the University

of San Diego.

He worked as an assistant at Chapman University from 1992-95 and

was director of basketball operations at UCLA in 1991-92.

“I am really excited to join the UC Irvine staff,” Boesel said. “I

live in Orange County and have followed basketball in this area, so I

am very aware of the success that UCI has had with three straight

20-win seasons. Any time you can work with a staff and program like

they have here, is exciting and presents and outstanding

opportunity.”

UCI Coach Pat Douglass believes Boesel is a strong addition to the

program.

“Terry is an experienced coach who is very knowledgeable on the

court,” Douglass said. “He has worked with every facet of the game,

from scheduling to recruiting to coordinating camps. He is very well

respected by his peers for his abilities.”
