Danny Krikorian, a four-year varsity basketball player who also

played three other varsity sports, has been named Boys Athlete of the

Year at Costa Mesa High.

A 6-foot sharpshooting guard, he graduated Thursday with the

school’s career three-pointer record (163). His four varsity seasons

included 780 points, three trips to the CIF Southern Section playoffs

and a share of the only league championship (the Pacific Coast League

co-title in 2001) in the program’s 43 varsity seasons.

Also named the Golden West League Boys Athlete of the Year, he was

a standout in track and field, an all-league performer in volleyball

this spring, and a member of the varsity football squad in 2001.

He averaged 16.6 points last basketball season, when he sank 82

three-pointers, including at least one in 25 of 26 games, en route to

first-team All-Golden West League recognition.

As a junior, Krikorian averaged 8.7 ppg and was second-team

All-PCL. He helped Coach Bob Serven’s Mustangs finish 18-10, tying

the school single-season victory record established by the 1965-66

squad.

He started as a sophomore on the aforementioned league title team

and chipped in off the bench as a freshmen, when the Mustangs ended a

seven-year absence from the CIF playoffs.

His final track and field season culminated in a third-place

finish in the long jump (19-2 1/2) at Golden West League finals, as

well as a fourth-place showing in the triple jump (a personal record

40-5 1/2).

Doubling up in the spring, he was an outside hitter on the

volleyball team, earning second-team all-league recognition.

Krikorian will continue his basketball career at Chapman

University.
