The Huntington Beach Art

Center Gallery will feature a solo exhibition from Sacramento

artist Joan Moment today through Aug. 9. The exhibit will feature

four series: Hand, Garden Fresco, Nasturtium and Constellation. The

FRIDAY

Golden West College’s

mainstage theater will present “All in the Timing,” a collection

of eight one-act comedies written by David Ives and directed by Tom

Amen. Shows will run Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 3

SATURDAY

Adventure Playground is open in Central Park. Adventure Playground

is a naturally wooded area with a man-made shallow pond, a mud slide

and cable slide for kids to explore. Activities are limited only by a

child’s imagination. Kids 6 and older are provided hammers, nails,

saws, lumber, old “junk” and rafts to create forts, clubhouses and

unusual looking hide outs. Bring a towel, a change of clothes and

shoes for the children, as well as a bag to carry dirty supplies

home. There are changing rooms and a shower for rinsing. Tie-on shoes

are mandatory -- sandals and water shoes are not allowed in the

playground. The playground is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through

Friday at Central Park near Gothard Street, 7111 Talbert Ave. General

Pete’s authentic “Dance for

the Waves” Luau includes a lei and shell greeting, Polynesian

buffet open bar, official tiki torch lighting ceremony, hula lessons,

Park Disc Golf offers players one of the nation’s first 18-hole

Playhouse will present Shakespeare in the Park with performances

Serena Brooke Day Surf

Camp and Amateur Competition will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

when world-class surfer Serena Brooke will lend her talents to a day

of fun for females of all ages on the north side of Huntington Beach

Pier at Pacific Coast Highway and 9th Street. Registration includes

surfing lessons or entry in an amateur surf competition plus

breakfast and lunch provided by Duke’s, a T-shirt and goody bag. Cost

is $40 until July 18. After July 18, registration will be available

The Huntington Beach

Playhouse will present “Quilters” at the Central Library Theater.

By Molly Newman and Barbara Damashek, with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick,

it is a joyous and moving celebration of American womanhood that pays

eloquent tribute to the courage and spirit of one of our nation’s

pioneer women and her six daughters. “Quilters” blends a series of

interrelated scenes capturing the terror, joy, harsh challenges and

abiding rewards of frontier life. Illuminating stories are contained

in the patches, or quilt blocks, with music, dance and drama. In the

end the various patches are assembled into a brilliantly colorful

The third annual Philips

Fusion a $225,000 sport, technology and music festival will

feature the world’s largest professional surfing competition, the

Honda Element U.S. Open of Surfing presented by O’Neill. It will run

through Aug. 3. The festival attracts more than 600 world-class

athletes from across the globe and features surfing, skateboarding

and BMX in innovative venues along with live concerts and an

interactive electronics festival. Activities will run from 8 a.m. to

The Doga-Paw-Looza 3K

Walk will be held at Huntington Central Park Dog Park from 8 a.m.

to 3 p.m. Walkers who bring in $100 in pledges for Dog Partners, a

nonprofit service organization, will receive $20 of opportunity

Surfing Walk of Fame will have its 10th anniversary induction

ceremony at 10 a.m. in front of Jack’s Surfboards and gala dinner at

6 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa. Attending

the induction ceremony is free and the gala dinner costs $150 per

person or $1,500 for a table of 12. Proceeds benefit the

The 49th annual Huntington

Beach Distance Derby, Orange County’s oldest road race, offers a

flat, fast and scenic oceanfront course. Races start and finish at

the Huntington Beach Pier Plaza Amphitheater next to the Huntington

Beach Pier. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female

winners of the 10-mile run, 5-mile run/walk and Surf Kids’ Fun Run.

The race benefits the Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguards program.

Sign-ups start at 6 a.m. for the 10-mile run, 7 a.m. for the 5-mile

run, and 10 a.m. for the Surf Kids Run. Cost is $25 for adults

through Aug. 1, $30 after. Children cost $15 through Aug. 1, $20

The ninth annual X Games will debut the sport of surfing in

National Surf League’s “The Game” format. Broadcast on ESPN, this new

event pits two eight-surfer teams in a playoff of the time-honored

rivalry between the East (Florida) and West (California) Coast

surfers. Each team will also include two wildcards, allowing both

teams to add surfers from other parts of the world. Staged much like

football, with four quarters and timeouts, the best scores from heats

are combined for a team score. The event features famous name surfers

such as Rob Machado and will include an interactive sponsor village.

AUG. 10

A Sand Castle Class will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on the south

side of Huntington Beach Pier that will cover sandcastle building

techniques. Using plywood and plastic forms, the class will include

form construction, sand/water mixing, carving techniques, design

tips, beach safety and a review of the Sand Castle Festival contest

rules to prepare prospective teams to enter the Huntington Beach Sand

Castle Festival Contest on Oct. 4. All tools and equipment to create

sand castles and sculptures at the class (shovels, buckets, trowels,

carving tools, straws, spray bottles and rakes) will be provided.

Classes will be taught by professional sand castle sculptor Kent

Trollen of Sand Castles Unlimited, who builds sand castles all over

the world, and was recently featured on the Arts & Entertainment

Channel as having one of the top 10 dream jobs in the United States.

You don’t have to compete in the Sand Castle Festival Contest to

Pacific Offshore Race will

set sail at 11 a.m. from Peter’s Landing Marina on Pacific Coast

Highway. The parking lot in front of Peter’s Landing will be full of

vendors and the Dry Pits for some awesome boats. Race courses vary by

location and are approximately 5 to 7 miles long. Racers run in

continuous loops, around check points marked by buoys and must

negotiate turns between 30 and 300 yards of the buoys. The length of

the race varies by class, with Super Cat and Super Vee running

approximately 100 miles and each smaller class running slightly fewer

laps and miles. Points are awarded to each boat for each race

completed, according to the order of finish. Information:
