Another day, another strong showing for the Corona del Mar High

girls’ water polo team.

Playing Saturday at the Villa Park girls under-18 water polo

tournament, the Sea Kings took the first two matches of the day

before falling in the third and final game.

Those results advanced the team to the fifth-place game of the

tournament on Sunday, a rematch of the 2003 CIF Southern Section

Division II title game against Villa Park, which was playing under

the moniker of “Orca.” Befitting of the two quality programs, that

contest ended in a 2-2 tie, with the teams sharing fifth place.

Corona del Mar opened the day Saturday by defeating Carlsbad 6-5,

overcoming a 5-3 deficit by scoring three goals in the final quarter

while holding Carlsbad scoreless. Katya Eadington provided two of

those fourth-quarter goals, with Jordan Anae scoring the other. Katie

Kubas also scored twice in the match and Brittany Fullen made eight

saves.

In the second game, the Sea Kings defeated El Toro 7-3. Eadington

provided three goals this time as Corona del Mar again surged in the

second half, when it scored six of its goals. Anae added two goals

and Kubas and Camille Hewko added one each.

In the finale, it was Corona del Mar’s opponent that rallied at

the end of the match. Five goals by the san Diego shores in the

fourth quarter turned what was a tight contest into a route as the

Sea Kings fell 14-5.

Kubas and Eadington scored again, while Chelsea Lyman added two

goals. Fullen finished the match with five saves and made 19 in the

three games combined.

In the fifth-place game, Kubas and Hewko each scored, but Orca

came back with a fourth-quarter goal, with 1:19 remaining to tie the

score and eventually the game. Fullen finished with four saves.
