The second day of the 14th annual Balboa Bay Club junior tennis

tournament produced a usual share of upsets, surprises and blowouts,

but no matter how its described, the field was simply cut in half at

the Balboa Bay Racquet Club.

Surviving was a mixture of top seeds and surprise guests. Local

players from the Newport-Mesa area advanced as did players from

Redlands, Beverly Hills and Bakersfield. They will all attempt to do

it again today when the tournament continues.

Among the highlights for Newport-Mesa players on Tuesday were a

pair of advancements into the boys 18 singles quarterfinals.

Spencer Reitz of Newport Coast cruised into the third round with a

6-3, 6-2 victory over Russell Meyerowitz of San Diego. Reitz will

play Ryan Malawy at 9:30 a.m. today with a semifinal berth and a

possible meeting with top-seeded Josh Lederman on the line. Malawy

ousted the No. 3 seed Tuesday.

Joining Reitz in the quarterfinals was Newport Beach’s Tyler Deck,

a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Geoff Hsu. He will face David Grazer in the

quarterfinals, also at 9:30 a.m. today.

In the boys 16 singles, top seed Ryan Caughren had no trouble

breezing past Stephen Stapleton, 6-0, 6-0 to reach the round of 16.

Also remaining in the 16 singles draw is Newport Beach’s Justin

Shomaker. He advanced to a meeting with Taylor Leiby by default.

In boys 12 singles, top seed Joshua Lorentzen advanced to the

quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Eugene Kang. Lorentzen has

lost just two games in his first two matches.

Tuesday.

singles advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over

Doubles play began Tuesday in the girls 16 division, with heavy

local involvement. Cassidy Grandstaff (Newport Beach) and Katie

McKitterick (Corona del Mar) defeated the Newport Beach-duo of Jill

Casserly and Katie Staudinger 6-0, 6-2. Carly Adams and Sasha Dunlap,

both of Newport Beach, were 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 winners over Andrea Zamucen

of Newport Beach and partner Molly McGlone.
